Annual Appointment Notices will now be online, no longer printed

Effective with the 2020 Fiscal and Academic Year, annual Appointment Notices will be available online and will no longer be printed and distributed to departments.

Please note that University Support Staff (USS) and Non-Benefit Eligible employees (Students, Lecturers and Temporary employees) are not subject to the annual Appointment Notice process. Athletics employees will receive Appointment Notices through a separate process later in July.

Therefore, Unclassified Professionals (UP) and Faculty can view, electronically acknowledge and print their 2020 Appointment Notice through myWSU:

• MyWSU (Chrome is the preferred browser)
• Faculty/Staff tab
• Human Resources Links
• Notice of Appointment (you may need to clear the browser cache to see the new link)

2020 Appointment Notices will be available to view, electronically acknowledge, print and revisit through Aug. 13, 2019. Because of the sensitive nature of this data, always close the browser to protect privacy.

Please contact the Help Desk at 978-4357 for assistance logging into MyWSU.

For questions with any of the information contained on your 2020 Appointment Notice, please discuss with your supervisor and they may contact HR.ServiceCenter@wichita.edu if needed.

WSU's Alexandre Shvartsburg wins Presidential Early Career Award

Alexandre Shvartsburg, assistant professor of chemistry, has been awarded as one of winners of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government to outstanding scientists and engineers who are beginning their independent research careers and show exceptional promise for leadership in science and technology.

Shvartsburg is the first recipient ever from Wichita State and only the third from Kansas.

He was recognized for his years of research, which focuses on advancing the technology and new applications of ion mobility separations.

“I stand truly heartened to receive all these congratulations. This is indeed a rare honor,” Shvartsburg says. “It is also the first ever in our field of ion mobility spectrometry. I feel it is an award to whole IMS community, which I accept as a powerful recognition of our rapidly expanding science.”

Fast-growing varsity Esports program, gaming lab put WSU on the map

Cameron Tredway knew about collegiate Esports powers such as the University of North Texas and the University of California, Irvine. He didn’t plan on competing against them.

Tredway’s place in the world of competitive Esports changed quickly last semester, and he is pleased to see Wichita State jumping in to a growing fusion of sports and entertainment with its new varsity team.

Opportunity to develop new First-Year Seminars on July 10 and 31

After piloting First-Year Seminars (FYS) for three years, the faculty have approved requiring an FYS course for all first-time-in-college students as part of their general education experience starting in fall 2021. This is an exciting opportunity to add another best practice to our other student success strategies on campus. Summer presents a good time for new course development. For those wanting to teach a seminar in fall 2020, we recommend you submit your course proposal to your department committee no later than Sept 30.

Outdoor Art Cafe kicks off Shocker Summer Series

The Outdoor Art Cafe is Discover WSU’s first installment in the Shocker Summer Series, and will include local, student, and alumni art work for sale! Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at one of the food trucks and enjoy an evening on the walkway from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, July 11, between Morrison Hall and Wiedemann Hall.

CMD courses are in full swing for summer. Two great sessions coming up are Overcoming Negativity in the Workplace from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, July 12, and Essential Skills for Effective Leaders from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, July 16-17.

Ins and outs of grant administration: open workshops for faculty, staff

The Office of Research will host multiple workshops for faculty and staff who need help with or have questions about grant administration. Research staff can help with all of your questions including those involving topics such as post-award, expenses, reports, funds, budget, cost-share and effort. Labs will be held throughout July and into August. No need to RSVP or register, just show up with your questions. All labs will be held in 409E Jardine Hall. Meet faculty award recipient Bayram Yildirim

Bayram Yildirim

Like many university professors, Bayram Yildirim pursued a career in academia because he didn't see how an industry job could match the thrill he would get from helping students develop their minds and build their futures.

Yildirim is the 2019 recipient of Wichita State's faculty award for community research. He has made a name for himself on campus - by being involved in faculty governance, by engaging deeply with his students and by regarding his colleagues and students as family.

KMUW invites you to Engage ICT today

 

Citizens and voters face monumental choices on issues that will define our future, and there is a great need for broader understanding of how what happens at the polls affects you. That's why, in January of 2016, KMUW launched “Engage ICT: Democracy on Tap.”

These monthly community conversations feature a panel of local experts and topics that touch your daily life. It's free, and so are the appetizers.

The next event will be at 5:30 p.m. today (Tuesday, July 9), at Roxy’s Downtown, 412 ½ E. Douglas.

Tenure and Promotion Workshop coming July 16

All faculty going up for promotion and/or tenure are welcome to attend a Tenure and Promotion Workshop at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, in 326 Clinton Hall. This is a working session, so please bring your laptop so you can make progress on your dossier. Snacks and coffee provided. 

SSS is hiring tutors for fall 2019

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded TRIO program for first-generation students, limited income students, as well as students with disability. The program offers many services that assist participants to persist and graduate from WSU, one of which is certified peer tutoring. SSS tutoring is conducted through a one-on-one basis on the WSU main campus only. Days and times of tutoring sessions are flexible and are based off of the tutor and student’s availability.

We are currently looking to fill tutor positions for the fall 2019 semester. Please see the flyer for qualifications and instructions for completing an application.

Last call to submit your fall events for the Welcomefest listing

Welcomefest takes place during the first two weeks of classes each semester and features dozens of activities. Popular programs awaiting new and returning Shockers include the Back to School Bash, Involvement Fair, Shocker Resource Fair, Syllabus Party, RSC Unplugged, Clash of the Colleges and more!  You can submit your department or organization events to be included in the Welcomefest marketing, including a printed guidebook.. The deadline to submit events for inclusion in all Welcomefest marketing is 5 p.m. Friday, July 12.

Please note, Student Involvement reserves the right to deny or terminate any events that are not planned completely or are deemed inappropriate for Welcomefest and/or the people in attendance.

Teen study participants needed

Are you a parent of a teenager? The Inspyre Research Lab is exploring what makes relationships healthy or unhealthy in adolescence. The purpose of the study is to explore perceptions of healthy and unhealthy relationships in teens.

Participants must be 13-19 years old and be fluent in English. The survey will take about 20 minutes to complete.
