Plan to attend fall faculty / staff kickoff and picnic
All faculty and staff are invited to attend the president’s yearly fall faculty / staff kickoff from 3-4 p.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 14), in the RSC Beggs Ballroom. The event will include university updates as well as discussions on senate leader priorities, community engagement and applied research. Following the event will be a university picnic with food, drinks and music from 4-5:30 p.m. on the RSC first floor – sponsored by Student Affairs. Please join us for the informative event!

Campus traffic flow changes temporarily as signage work is completed
To facilitate better traffic flow around campus, and in keeping uniform with the rest of Perimeter Drive, two stop signs were removed on Perimeter Drive and relocated onto Memorial Drive. Commuters turning east onto Memorial off of Hillside and those heading west on Memorial toward Perimeter will need to stop at the intersection of Memorial and Perimeter.
Vehicles traveling north or south on Perimeter will no longer be required to stop. Signs were posted at the intersection cautioning motorists about the upcoming changes.
Tenure and Promotion Session
All faculty going up for promotion and / or tenure are welcome to attend a Tenure and Promotion Session at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, in 326 Clinton Hall. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

Register for the 2nd Annual Academic Resources Conference (ARC), a free, full-day training event for all WSU instructors and interested staff. The event runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 15), at Hughes Metropolitan Complex.
Can’t spare the full day? That’s okay! The ARC is designed for people who need to come-and-go. With 30 breakout sessions including panel discussions on Creative Curriculum, Issues in Higher Ed Today, and Teaching for Honors, there is something for everyone. Plus, there’s a free lunch!

This 10-week series is designed for high-potential professionals

WSU Weekly Briefings to resume with Interim President Andy Tompkins
The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 15) in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Interim President Andy Tompkins.
Zach Gearhart, director of Government Relations at WSU, will give the overall university update.
The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.

The annual Shocker Resource Fair is a great way to tell new Shockers about the opportunities, programs and resources that your department or office has to offer! The fair will take place from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, on the Shocker Hall Plaza.

WSU’s Center for Real Estate hosts series of roundtables across the state
Each August, the Center for Real Estate hosts a series of Real Estate Roundtables across the state. Last week one was held in Manhattan. On Thursday, Aug. 15, we’ll be in Lawrence, with programs planned for Kansas City, Topeka, and Wichita planned for later in the month.
The Real Estate Roundtables are invitation-only events, bringing together select groups of residential agents, developers, builders, and other housing market professionals to discuss their current perceptions of the local housing market.
Stanley Longhofer uses these meetings as a way to get a “view from the trenches” as he prepares the annual Kansas Housing Markets Forecast series, which will be released in October.
Help wanted at Back to School Bash on Aug. 17
Back to School Bash (B2SB) serves as a kick-off to the academic year with high-energy games, free food and lots of prizes for new and returning Shockers. For this event to run smoothly, dozens of faculty and staff are needed to check-in students, run activities and network. Last year’s event had more than 1,500 students in attendance, and we hope you will consider volunteering.
B2SB takes place from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, in the RSC east courtyard. Volunteers will receive the official B2SB shirt, and will have the opportunity to serve the entire time or in shifts.

Volunteers needed for Clash of the Colleges
Interested in volunteering for Clash of the Colleges? Student Success: First-Year Programs and Campus Recreation are looking for enthusiastic individuals to volunteer during the 5th Annual Clash of the Colleges on Friday, Aug. 23.
If you want to be a part of this iconic event, go to www.wichita.edu/clash to complete the volunteer form. Volunteers must attend one of two training meetings, either from noon-2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, or 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, in 266 RSC.

Badges offer more courses for working professionals
Wichita State continues to offer courses for working professionals through its online badge program.
Badges are self-paced, online courses conveniently designed for students looking to develop new skills and gain new competencies related to their job. They can also be stacked over time and applied toward degree completion.
Offerings range from topics such as “Human Resources” to “The Skeletal Muscle as an Endocrine Organ.” Go to Badge Catalog to see a full list.
Scholarship Information
Students who enroll in a badge course by Monday, Sept. 9, will have the tuition and fees waived for one badge course for the fall semester. To learn more, visit badges.wichita.edu or 316-978-7579.
WSU's badge program started in 2015 with one badge. With more than 80 badge offerings now, the program continues to meet community and industry demand.
Workforce education is among one of the highest priorities in today's higher education landscape. At Wichita State, that includes empowering working individuals with for-credit education that meets employer needs and matches the schedule of a busy life.
Unlike other online nondegree courses, WSU's badges are tied to credit hours and are subject to all Higher Learning Commission regional accreditation standards.
Badge coursework is part of a student's permanent academic record and will appear on an official transcript. Licensed professionals can also earn contact hours toward relicensure, as well as college credit. Courses are taught by experienced faculty who are subject matter experts.
The courses provide a structure that allows WSU to work with employers to develop curriculum specific to industry needs. This key distinction allows employers to know that the information learned in a badge course is valuable and relevant.
When a student completes a badge course, it can be shared on social media, such as on LinkedIn, and displayed on a digital resume with a link for employers / potential employers to see the details of that course.
Suicide prevention: We all can help out
You can help prevent suicide. Join a training session provided by Counseling and Prevention Services and learn more about how to prevent suicide in our community. This month's session is 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23. This training is part of the #WSUWeSupportU campaign and covers signs that someone may need additional support, how to start conversations with people who may need help, and the resources that are available both at WSU and in the community.
Wichita State opens practice for 2019 season
The Wichita State University volleyball team opened practice for the 2019 season Thursday,
Aug. 8, in the Aetna Multi-Purpose Facility at Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers, who return a pair of starters from last season's team in junior middle
blocker Emma Wright and sophomore outside hitter Megan Taflinger, are slated to open
their season with an exhibition match against the Kansas Jayhawks at 3 p.m. Saturday,
Aug. 17, in Charles Koch Arena.
The first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a Wichita State volleyball schedule
magnet.
