Call for 2019-20 Service-Learning Scholars
The Wichita State University Service-Learning team is a critical component in the University’s efforts to accomplish its strategic plan.
The Service Learning Faculty Scholars program has been designed to empower committed service-learning faculty to cultivate and support interest in service-learning in their fellow faculty members and through their classes and college. Our goal is to infuse the campus and community with a spirit of service-based academic engagement that ties the classroom experience to applied learning and experiential knowledge.
We are currently seeking applicants for the 2019-20 academic year. All application materials should be submitted in .pdf form to Rhonda Lewis by midnight Friday, Sept. 27.
Any questions about the program or application can be directed to Rhonda Lewis at rhonda.lewis@wichita.edu, and / or Chelsea Redger-Marquardt at chelsea.redger@wichita.edu.

Dr. Jim Steck appointed liaison between Engineering, NIAR
Jim Steck
Wichita State University College of Engineering and the National Institute for Aviation Research have appointed Dr. James Steck as an official liaison between the two operating units. Steck is a professor of flight dynamics and controls in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.
“In an effort to better collaborate and grow research opportunities for the whole university, NIAR and the College of Engineering are jointly creating a liaison role to connect groups across the two entities,” said College of Engineering Dean Dennis Livesay. “Specifically, the liaison will work to connect groups with complementary skills and needs, and to do the same with external customers.”
Steck has broad expertise in a wide variety of disciplines including flight controls, data analytics and quantum neural computing. “We think this makes him ideally suited to serve in this role going forward,” Livesay said.
Steck may be reached at james.steck@wichita.edu or 978-6396.

Special exhibition on WSU campus showcases artist's commemoration of NASA Apollo missions
From now to Nov. 17, a piece of space race history is viewable on Wichita State University’s campus. A special exhibition titled “Lowell Nesbitt: Apollo 1969” is on display at the Experiential Engineering Building, and features prints made by artist Lowell Nesbitt. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
Nesbitt was commissioned by NASA in 1969 to commemorate its Apollo 9 and 13 missions as part of the NASA Art Program. The exhibit was made possible through a new program at WSU’s Ulrich Museum of Art called Ulrich Connections, which ties the museum’s robust exhibition and event programming more directly to the world outside its walls.
"Lowell Nesbitt: Apollo, 1969" is cosponsored by WSU’s College of Engineering and NASA in Kansas.
A reception celebrating the exhibition will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 on the second floor of the Experiential Engineering Building. The reception is free and open to the public.
Ulrich Director Leslie Brothers said the exhibition was not only a way to connect with other campus units, but also tapped into the ongoing excitement of celebrating the moon landing exactly a half century ago. Brothers said displaying the exhibition in the Experiential Engineering Building was a perfect match because WSU faculty and students continue to conduct NASA-funded research there.
“As a university art museum, we are making connections through the collection around what people care about – across campus and in the community,” Brothers said.
Scott Miller, professor and chair of aerospace engineering at WSU and director of the NASA in Kansas organization, said visitors to the exhibition would find Nesbitt's artwork just as exciting today as audiences did the first time around.
"The Ulrich Museum, through the art of Lowell Nesbitt, once again captures the sights and emotions of an amazing time," Miller said. "The NASA in Kansas organization is extremely proud to play a small role in this exhibit.”
"Lowell Nesbitt: Apollo, 1969" is cosponsored by WSU’s College of Engineering and NASA in Kansas; the exhibition is free and open to the public.

KMUW interns write, report, ride scooters and explore careers in journalism
Mornings at KMUW start with a meeting in the newsroom in their Old Town office. Tom Shine and his reporters stand around a table and discuss the stories for that day and beyond.
Some are routine – attend the mayor’s briefing or Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Others send reporters on a quest for information about diseased bats in northwest Kansas or on an electric scooter ride.
“Every time I tell someone I’m an intern at KMUW they say, ‘Wow, that awesome,’ and they think it’s a great thing, which it is,” Wichita State senior Kylie Cameron said. “I came here and I realized there was still so much to learn. Audio, radio, writing for voice. It’s definitely made me more of a jack-of-all trades.”
