Mini-symposium to honor Shvartsburg’s recent award for scientists and engineers
There will be a "Mini-symposium on Ion Mobility and Mass Spectrometry" to honor Alex Shvartsburg’s recent Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, today (Wednesday, Sept. 4) in 224 McKinley Hall.
2:30-3:15 p.m. Seminar by Alex Shvartsburg: “High-Resolution Differential Ion Mobility Spectrometry: Frontline Technology and New Applications.”
3:15-4 p.m. Seminar by Ben Garcia: “Quantitative proteomics for understanding cancer epigenetics.”
Garcia is a John McCrea Dickson M.D. Presidential Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

Office of Research – Organizational Changes
In an effort to better reflect its primary focus areas, the Office of Research and Technology Transfer is rebranding to The Office of Research and Economic Development. The office will still handle technology transfer, but the name change reflects the important role Wichita State plays in economic development.
John Tomblin, WSU vice president for research and economic development, has also appointed two additional associate vice presidents: Debbie Franklin for strategic initiatives and Tonya Witherspoon for industry engagement and applied learning.

Dog days of summer with the WSUPD
Come and have a hot dog on the WSU Police Department, and meet some of the officers working on campus. Officers will begin serving free hot dogs at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 4), on the north side of the Rhatigan Student Center until they run out. Veggie dogs will be available as well.
Designing a First-Year Seminar: Information meeting
Ever thought about creating the perfect class? You now have a chance. After piloting
First-Year Seminars (FYS) for three years, WSU faculty have approved the expansion
of FYS courses, with all first-time-in-college students enrolling in an FYS course
as part of their general education experience starting in fall 2021. This translates
to an exciting opportunity for faculty and full-time instructors who would be interested
in designing and teaching their own FYS course.
Members of the FYS team will be holding an informational meeting for tenure and non-tenure
track faculty members who would like to learn more about how to develop a first-year
seminar course at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, in 264 RSC.

WSU Weekly Briefing to feature Kimberly Engber and Honors College
The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Kimberly Engber providing an Honors College update.
Zach Gearhart, director of Government Relations at WSU, will give the overall university update.
The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.
Campus invited to an open house in the newly expanded Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College space in Shocker Hall on Sept. 12
All students, staff, and faculty are invited to be a part of the formal dedication of the newly expanded space for the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College in Shocker Hall on Thursday, Sept. 12. Remarks will begin at noon, with light refreshments immediately following. Come see the new student space! The open house will be hosted by the Honors College Student Council until 2 p.m.
Workshops offered in Ablah Library
University Libraries will hold two Savvy Researcher workshops this week, and two more during the week of Sept. 8.
The first workshop, “Writing a Literature Review,” will be from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday,
Sept. 4, in 217 Ablah Library. Learn all the steps to create a literature review,
from conducting comprehensive research to synthesizing perspectives to presenting
your findings in this very helpful workshop.
The second, “Tour Ablah Library,” will be from noon- 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, and
will start in 217 Ablah Library. See the VR Zone, the One-Button Studio and other
multi-media project development tools, as well as study rooms, collections, and other
spaces. We will also get a brief introduction to article databases other off-campus
access to library resources.
The third, Using Library Databases: Tips and Tricks, will be from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday,
Sept, 11, in 217 Ablah Library. Save time and get better results in your research
utilizing techniques like proximity searching, setting filters and limits, and using
thesauri and wildcards.
The fourth, Introduction to Endnote, will be from noon-1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in
217 Ablah Library. Learn to use Endnote to upload citation data from library databases,
create new citations in various citation styles, organize citations, and insert citations
into a MS Word document.

Study Abroad Fair coming Sept. 17

Shockers After Dark set for Sept. 13
Student Affairs invites students, faculty, and staff to Shockers After Dark from 8-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, on the first floor, Rhatigan Student Center, and Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes.
Come to the RSC for two hours of fantastic free fun! Activities include intuitive
readers, a poker tournament, gaming, BINGO, bowling, and karaoke. There will also
be free food and prizes. The first 150 attendees will receive a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt.
