We are excited to welcome Bill Burnett, co-author of this year’s WSU Reads book, “Designing Your Life.” He will host two lectures from 11 a.m.-noon and 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the CAC Theater.

U.S. diplomat to speak about space exploration
The Wichita Space Initiative (WSI) kicks off the second year of its Space Exploration Lecture Series with a talk from Michael Michaud. Michaud was a Foreign Service Officer for 32 years before turning full time to writing. He is author of “Contact With Alien Civilizations,” as well as a novel and 35 articles and journal papers on the implications of possible future contact with extraterrestrial intelligence.
Michaud’s talk, “Extraterrestrial Intelligence: Grand Thought Experiment or Possible Future Discovery?”, will discuss issues related the impact of a future discovery of extraterrestrial intelligent life. It will take place at 3:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 5) in 100 Lindquist Hall. As always, WSI talks are free and open to the public.

Notifications from Care Team, Disability Services, OIEC, Conduct, and Academic Integrity from notifications@maxient.com
The investigation of reported cases to the WSU Care Team, the Office of Disability Services, the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC), and the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (SCCS) often requires notifications to students, staff, and faculty. The Maxient system is used by these offices to send these notifications which provide information on requests, accommodations, expectations, or requirements needed to effectively care for students and complete processes.
The Maxient system sends notification as emails with attached letters. The attached letter will be a PDF document and will always begin with a 10-digit number (the case number in the Maxient system). We have provided an example above that demonstrates the standard text used for all messages. The only difference will be the case number listed, and the name found after that case number.
Emails sent via Maxient come from notifications@maxient.com and will include the sender’s first and last name. For example, an email sent via Maxient by Teri Hall will show up as an email from “Teri Hall (via Maxient). These emails are not spam. Please do not delete them. If you have specific questions related to the content of the attached document, reach out to the person listed as the sender. In the provided example above, that would be Sandra Graybill, coordinator, Student Conduct & Community Standards.

Graduate School Dean Coleen Pugh inducted as Fellow into American Chemical Society

Graduate School Dean Coleen Pugh was recently inducted into the prestigious Fellows Program of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific organization with more than 150,000 members. She was one of 70 chemists inducted in August.
The ACS Fellows Program was created in 2008 “to recognize members of the American Chemical Society for outstanding achievements in and contributions to Science, the Profession, and the Society. The honor of a Fellow designation is bestowed on ACS members who have achieved excellence in two defined areas – scientific / professional accomplishments and service to the ACS.
Pugh was recognized for contributions to synthetic polymer chemistry, including liquid crystalline polymers, controlled radical polymerizations, biodegradable polymers, fluorinated polymers, polymers from renewable sources, and polymers with arene-perfluoroarene pi-pi stacking interactions.
She also was recognized for exemplary service to the ACS polymer community through organization of symposia at regional and national ACS meetings, mentorship and promotion of equity and inclusion in STEM, and public outreach.

Mechanical Engineering Seminar tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 6)
“The Unexpected Skills to Succeed in Engineering” is the title of the Mechanical Engineering Seminar from 3:30-4:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 6) in 128 Jabara Hall. The lecture will be presented by Kevin Gaines, design engineer at Airbus Americas Engineering.
Commercial aircraft manufacturing is a competitive industry with a bewildering array of challenges. Engineers are under pressure to design components that are lighter, stronger, less expensive to manufacture, and in less time than previous designs.
When these criteria contradict each other, engineers must make difficult decisions about how to balance their priorities without sacrificing the No. 1 priority in aviation: safety.
Engineers in aerospace approach problems like these by drawing on knowledge from a variety of disciplines, like metallurgy, chemistry, CNC manufacturing and physics. However, the greatest challenges an engineer faces aren’t always just mathematical or scientific, but political, psychological, or even philosophical.
Gaines will examine the skills that benefit engineers the most, the skills that engineers often lack, and how 13 years of engineering brought him back to the same university campus where his career started.

KMUW to host mayoral candidate debate as part of Engage ICT
KMUW is hosting a mayoral debate as part of Engage ICT, in partnership with the Wichita
Eagle and the Kansas Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Candidates
Jeff Longwell and Brandon Whipple will answer questions, including those submitted
in advance by KMUW listeners, on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The scholarship brochure for the graduating high school class of 2020 has arrived, and 45,000 brochures will soon be hitting every high school senior through campus visits, high school visits, college fairs, and through the mail.
This brochure highlights the scholarship competitions available to seniors this fall,
including information on the Distinguished Scholarship Invitational, the Allen, Gibbs,
and Houlik L.C. Barton Competition, the Wallace Invitational for Scholarships in Engineering,
