Academic Convocation will be hosted at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 12), in Wilner Auditorium. You are formally invited to attend the book signing and lite breakfast in the Ulrich Museum at 8:30 a.m., prior to the formal event.
We are excited to welcome Bill Burnett, co-author of this year’s WSU Reads book, “Designing Your Life.” He will host two lectures from 11 a.m.-noon and 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the CAC Theater.

'WSU Reads' book signing at Ulrich Museum of Art
Kick off this year's Academic Convocation with coffee, pastries, and convocation keynote speaker Bill Burnett, who will be at the Ulrich Museum of Art from 8-9:15 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 12) to sign copies of "Designing Your Life," the WSU Reads 2019-20 book. The event is free and open to the public. This program is organized by the Office of First-Year Studies.

Textron Aviation will be the exclusive sponsor for three years of four division programs: Tenacious Ten, No Veteran Left Behind, Community Engagement Ambassadors, and Applied Learning and Partnership Development. With combined efforts, these programs work to engage and support a variety of underrepresented groups and help students be successful.

Sept. 11 Remembrance Ceremony in the CAC Theater

On Sept 11, 2001, the United States was the target of a terrorist attack which killed 2,996 people and injured more than 6,000 others. The attack was coordinated by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda, and proved to be the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the United States.
This event plunged the United States in a War of Terror, where we invaded Afghanistan to depose the Taliban. We still fight this war today, and it has changed our country forever.
As we remember the lives lost and those first responders who came to their aid, we are holding a one-hour memorial service in honor of their memories at 6 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 11) in the CAC Theater.
Chavius Lewis, commanding officer, USS Wichita, will be among those participating in the ceremony, hosted by WSU Military and Veteran Services.

Campus invited to an open house in the newly expanded Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College space in Shocker Hall on Sept. 12
All students, staff, and faculty are invited to be a part of the formal dedication of the newly expanded space for the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College in Shocker Hall tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 12). Remarks will begin at noon, with light refreshments immediately following. Come see the new student space! The open house will be hosted by the Honors College Student Council until 2 p.m.
Strategic Planning Update: A year in review . . .
The Strategic Planning Committee is hosting a town hall from 3-4:30 p.m. Thursday,
Sept. 19, in 208 Hubbard Hall.
The September town hall will provide an opportunity to share the results of the committee’s
work on input received at the May 2 town hall. All feedback was reviewed, evaluated
and incorporated into the update that will be shared on Sept. 19. The town hall meeting
is open to all members of the campus community, and the Wichita community at large.
Prior to the September Town Hall, please take a moment to review the Strategic Planning
Update. Visit the website and submit your feedback on or before Thursday, Sept. 12.

WSU HR Total Rewards team is once again hosting on-site flu shots, available to State of Kansas employees and their spouses who are currently enrolled in SEHP medical insurance. If registration is closed or no appointments are available in the online scheduler, a limited number of walk-in appointments will be accepted each day. Please note that walk-in appointments may experience longer wait times.

WSU Weekly Briefing to feature online scholarship announcement
The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Mark Porcaro talking about the USS Wichita online scholarship, along with Chavius Lewis, commanding officer of the USS Wichita.
Tracee Friess, director of communication for research and technology transfer, will give the overall university update.
The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.

Engineering & I.T. Career Fair - Sept. 12
WSU Engineering and I.T. students have an exciting opportunity to connect with employers who are looking to hire interns, co-op students and full-time employees at the Engineering & I.T Career Fair from 2-5 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 12). Check in at the RSC Wu Lounge next to Room 221. Professional dress is required.

Ceramic artist John Neely to give talk and free workshops on campus this week
John Neely, professor of ceramics at Utah State University, and an artist featured
in the Ulrich Museum's new exhibition, "Clay Currents: The Wichita National Ceramics
Invitational," will be on campus this week to deliver an artist talk and hold workshops.
His talk, "A Potter's Journey," will be begin at 5:30 p.m. with a reception, and then
the talk at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at the Ulrich Museum of Art. ulrich.wichita.edu
He will hold workshops for students and the public from 9 a.m.-noon, and again from
1:30-4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 12 and 13 in Henrion Hall.
All events are free and open to the public. Programming is co-sponsored by the WSU
Ceramics Guild and the ADCI Arts Advocates.
Shocker Circle registration is open now!
Registration is now open for the Shocker Circles.
Circles are intended to be an engagement process for collaboration and understanding
as it relates to shared governance. Each participant is assigned to a table at random
and each will have a trained facilitator. The principles and practices of the circle
process provide a structure that allows and encourages idea sharing and conversation.

Department of History invites the WSU community to its fall 2019 lecture
John Reda of Illinois State University will give a talk, "Imperial Illusions: de Bourgmont and the French in 18th Century America," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in 231 Hubbard Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Contact Robin Henry at robin.henry@wichita.edu for more information.
WSU students can apply for free registration to NASA Conference
WSU, in cooperation with NASA, Tennessee Valley Interstellar Workshop (TVIW), and
Ad Astra Kansas Science Foundation, is hosting the 6th Interstellar Symposium and
NASA Advanced Propulsion Workshop from Nov. 10-15, in downtown Wichita. This meeting
will bring in experts in the physics, engineering, humanities, and social sciences
of interstellar travel as part of a Congressionally-mandated NASA effort to launch
the first interstellar probe by 2069.
A private gift from Dr. Robert Hampson will fund the registration costs ($125 value)
for a limited number of WSU students to attend the week-long event, including the
Sunday evening welcome reception and all conference meals. Those interested in applying
for free registration must complete the form.
The application deadline is Monday, Sept. 30.
Each entrant must provide a one paragraph statement describing their interest in attending
the Symposium and Workshop. The best applicants will be chosen by the local organizing
committee. This opportunity is open to WSU students of any major or field of study
– both undergraduate and graduate.

Shockers After Dark set for Sept. 13
Student Affairs invites students, faculty, and staff to Shockers After Dark from 8-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, on the first floor, Rhatigan Student Center, and Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes.
Come to the RSC for two hours of fantastic free fun! Activities include intuitive
readers, a poker tournament, gaming, BINGO, bowling, and karaoke. There will also
be free food and prizes. The first 150 attendees will receive a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt.

Physical therapy students looking for research project subjects
Students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Wichita State, and their research advisor, Barbara Smith, PhD, PT, are looking for participants for our research study on the effects posterior pelvic tilting (the flattening of the back in sitting or standing) on core strength and endurance. Your participation in this study may help the field of physical therapy to help better understand core strength / endurance and its effects on the body.
If chosen to participate in our study, you will be required to come to the Wichita State University Old Town Campus at 213 N. Mead, on Friday, Sept. 20 or Saturday, Sept. 21, for an initial evaluation.
You will be able to select a 30-minute time block that is convenient for your schedule. At the initial evaluation, you will be asked to complete the health history questionnaire that you filled out in the screening process. You will perform a muscle endurance test for your back muscles and a strength test for your abdominal muscles. At this time you will be assigned to a group, which may include an eight-week posterior pelvic-tilting exercise program starting at 25 reps, progressing to 50, 75, and 100, every two weeks. At the four-week mark you will submit a video check-in via text or email to check for proper form.
These exercises should take no more than 10-15 minutes per day. All materials and instructions will be provided. Each group will be required to return to the Wichita State University Old Town Campus on Nov 15-16 for an eight-week re-evaluation lasting about 10-15 minutes.

Join the couch to 5k training program with Campus Recreation
Campus Recreation is wanting to help those with little-to-no running experience prepare
for the upcoming 5k Pumpkin Run on Oct. 19.
This six-week plan includes three one-hour workouts per week at 3 p.m. Monday-Wednesday-Friday,
for six weeks. Training starts Monday, Sept. 9. Participants must be registered by end of first week, Friday, Sept. 13.
Register in person at the Heskett Center Campus recreation desk. Cost is $25, and
includes your race registration.
A minimum of 10 people are needed for the program to run.

A Conversation with Schuyler Bailar
Come for a conversation with Schuyler Bailar at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in 265 RSC. The program is co-sponsored by Spectrum LGBTQ & Allies, and LGBTQ+ Shocker Ambassadors.
Since being recruited for the Harvard Men’s Swim team in 2015, Bailar has told his story to audiences across the country in over 100 appearances, including on The Ellen Show, The Olympic Channel, 60 Minutes, at the CIA, the NCAA, and scores of conferences, companies, and schools. His talk has inspired many to achieve their dreams while also finding better comfort and grounding in who they are.
