Please see the information below about applying for the National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI).
Title: National Science Foundation (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI)
Purpose: The MRI program provides up to $4 million for either the acquisition or development of a research instrument/equipment for science and engineering research; such instruments/equipment are often too costly for support through other NSF programs.
You must email proposals@wichita.edu by noon Monday, Sept. 30, if you are interested in submitting a proposal in response to this solicitation.
Amount:
Track 1: $100,000 -$999,999 (less than one million dollars)
Track 2: $1,000,000 - $4,000,000 (between one and four million dollars)
Eligibility: WSU is allowed to submit up to two Track 1 proposals, and one Track 2 proposal.
If there are more than two WSU proposers for Track 1 and more than one WSU proposer for Track 2, there will be an internal competition to determine the best proposal(s) to move forward.
Deadlines: You MUST email proposals@wichita.edu by noon Monday, Sept. 30, if you are interested in submitting a proposal in response to this solicitation. Please indicate whether you are planning to submit a Track 1 or Track 2 proposal. If an internal competition is needed, NOTICES OF INTENT will be due to the WSU Office of Research no later than noon Monday, Oct. 14. If selected to move forward, full applications will be due to NSF by Jan. 19, 2020.

The annual report is a compilation of many recruitment initiatives, processes, event
numbers, and more throughout the year.
- Reviewed 17,416 applications
- Granted $53,400 in application fee waivers to low-income students
- Processed 2,861 applications for special populations including badge students, concurrent enrollment, lifelong learners and Shocker Pathway
- Attended 371 college fairs and 586 high school visits
- A 34.2% growth in enrollment from Missouri; 14.1% growth from Oklahoma; and 7.4% growth from Texas
- 744 unique portal accounts created in the Transfer Gateway
- Hosted five Admitted Student Receptions in regional areas engaging with 201 students and parents
- 18,122 total visitors attended events, group visits and/or campus visits
- 55 videos produced
- More than 1.5 million emails and over 327,550 pieces of outbound mail were sent
- 51,488 phone calls and 12,667 postcards were completed by Shocker Outreach Team

Register for the Shocktoberfest Door Decorating Competition!
Shocktoberfest is a time to celebrate Shocker Pride! Student groups from all over campus will be competing and participating in events like Wu’s Birthday Bash, Hunger Games, Dodgeball and Songfest.
Departments can join in on the fun by participating in the annual Door Decorating Competition. Winning departments will receive a catered staff party valued at up to $100.
The deadline to enter is Wednesday, Oct. 16, and all doors must be decorated by the end of business on Friday, Oct. 18.

Have ideas for creative projects in the community but don’t know where to start? Want to make an impact using your artistic talents? Join Harvester Arts for the Creative Hustle Community Workshops & get your creative hustle going! This series of four workshops will give attendees a foundation in placemaking and event planning they can use to move forward with creating projects in their community.
Creative Hustle Community Workshops will focus on four central topics:
Oct. 1: The Big Picture: Best Practices in Creative Placemaking & Socially-Engaged Art, Goal Setting, and Outlining Your Vision
Oct. 15: Taking Action: Logistics, Budgets, Fundraising
Oct. 29: Telling Your Story: Marketing, Outreach, and Messaging
Nov. 12: Measuring Success: Outcomes, Evaluations, and Documentation
Workshop participants will be encouraged to attend all sessions, but not required. Harvester Arts staff will be available for individual consulting in addition to the group sessions.

The Riverfront Legacy Master Plan is a master planning process intended to create a vision and master plan for the east bank of the Arkansas River. This plan is driven by community input and engagement, all while taking into account previous plans, studies, and new development. We need you.

The next session of Managing the Employment Relationship is Wednesday, Oct. 9
The next session of Managing the Employment Relationship Training is scheduled for
2:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 9, in 264 Rhatigan Student Center. To register for this
training, go to myTraining through myWSU.
This course is provided for leaders who supervise employees (UP, USS, students),
and will focus on the overall employment relationship. It will provide guidance on
managing performance, setting expectations, how to identify when an employee has not
met expectations, and how to effectively address those concerns. This could include
concerns with attendance, job performance, conflict with coworkers, etc. This training
will also introduce you to tools to use to effectively document an unmet expectation.

Workforce Innovation Conference to be at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Wichita Oct. 7-8
Join us for the second annual Workforce Innovation Conference, hosted by the Kansas Department of Commerce and the Kansas Board of Regents on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7-8. The Workforce Innovation Conference will feature a series of presentations and workshops aimed at enhancing and improving workforce solutions in the State of Kansas. Conference themes are Developing the Future Workforce, Engaging the Talent Pipeline, and Enhancing Career Pathways.
Scott Stump, an assistant secretary with the U.S. Department of Education, will present the keynote address. Other conference speakers include Lynn Rogers, Kansas Lieutenant Governor; Kristy Rooney, program advisor and facilitator for Mindset Neuroscience and program coordinator for Austin Adult Learning; and Sarita Maybin, international speaker, communication expert and author.

New partnership provides custom jerseys for WSU Varsity Esports
Agent Ink Apparel has partnered with Wichita State to become the official outfitter for WSU Varsity Esports. They recently delivered custom jerseys to the team and released the final design on social media.
Joey Nowlin, founder and CEO of Agent Ink Apparel, participated in the WSU Center for Entrepreneurship’s 2019 summer E-Launch program, which helps develop entrepreneurial activity that leads to the commercialization of ideas. Nowlin worked with the Center and WSU Ventures to refine his idea of providing premium jersey designs and prints to collegiate esports teams.
“It was a great opportunity to learn about what our customers want and what they need,” he said. “It opened my eyes to see how Agent Ink Apparel can best serve our customers and grow to become the best we can be.”

Interested in advising a student organization?
With more than 325 student organizations at Wichita State, each organization is required to have an advisor that is a full-time faculty or staff member. We currently have two student organizations that need an advisor.
Marshallville is returning to campus, and serves as a basketball support team, as the previous description stated. The hope of that would be to unify people who might not normally come to games, and get them to support Shocker basketball.
The second organization is Shockerthon, which supports the Via Christi’s Children’s Miracle Network (CMN). We partner alongside CMN to plan and host a dance marathon each year in which we raise funds to benefit Children’s Miracle Network.
Becoming an advisor can be very beneficial to both the advisor and the students of the organization. These benefits include, but are not limited to, working with students as they learn and develop new skills, developing a personal relationship with students, and furthering personal goals or interests by choosing to work with an organization that reflects interests.

Volunteers needed for a research study
Study name: Effects of Lower Extremity Blood Flow Restriction Exercise on Strength Generation and Interleukin 6 Levels in the Elderly
Research Topic/Purpose of the study: To determine whether Blood Flow Restriction therapy during moderate exercise by people 55 years of age or older results in improved functional activity and health outcomes. Such findings may provide a new approach to promoting health through moderate exercise.
Procedures: Participants will pedal an exercise bike with or without Blood Flow Restriction therapy for approximately 30-minutes, three times per week over a 12-week period. At the beginning of the study and every three weeks, blood samples will be collected and tested for proteins related to exercise and a 30 second sit-to-stand activity will be performed to assess exercise functional outcomes.
Time: Participation is expected to last about 45 minutes. Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria:
- Participants must be age 55 or older
- No known muscular disorders
- No known neurological disorders
- No known cardiopulmonary disorders
- No use of nicotine products
- Not have diabetes
- Not be in an active exercise program

Step Afrika coming Sept. 27
Join Student Activities Council and the Multicultural Greek Council for a fun and exciting event, Step Afrika! at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, in the CAC Theater.
Step Afrika! is the first professional dance company dedicated to the African-American tradition of "stepping.” Step Afrika! Blends the percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, African traditional dance, and influences from a variety of other dance and art forms. The blend of technique, agility, and pure energy makes each performance unique and leaves the audience with their hearts pounding.
Admission is free to WSU students with Shocker ID, $3 faculty/staff; $5 general admission, and $1 for kids 12 and under. Doors open at 5 p.m. No advance ticket sales. Cash or check only accepted at the door.
