Students have asked for an improved study room - with restroom facilities - for years. We appreciate your patience while we renovate this space to better meet the needs of the WSU community. As a reminder, Chromebooks are available for three-day checkout, and Ablah Library's hours will be extended pre-finals.

Talk in Language and Linguistics Colloquium Series features Douglas Parham

You’re invited to the first talk in the Fall 2019 Language and Linguistics Colloquium Series. Douglas Parham, associate professor, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, will give a talk at 3 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 24) in 211 Hubbard Hall. The talk is titled, "The Roles of Linguistics in Understanding Speech-Language Disorders." This event is free and open to the public.
Language and linguistics apply broadly to all areas of human communication. These areas include verbal, non-verbal, gestural, and other forms of relating, describing, categorizing, and transducing information from one human being to another. Unfortunately, all these areas are required to be interpreted on the basis not only of typical/expected communicative interaction, but also—and more importantly—of atypical/unexpected communicative interaction.
This presentation will share four areas of interest from the perspective of the discipline of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD).
First, we will overview the primary domains of speech production (i.e., respiration, phonation, articulation, resonance, and prosody).
Second, we will overview the primary domains of language (phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics).
Third, we will discuss three general disorders that relate to speech and language: articulatory/phonological disorders, specific language impairment, and speech-language disorders related to Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Finally, we will explore the roles that linguistics can play in understanding speech-language disorders.
New email reminders for Pcard and travel items in Chrome River!
Effective Monday Oct. 21, Chrome River users will begin receiving system generated email notifications for aged or outstanding transactions.
The notifications will be sent according to the following schedule:
Monday mornings:
Pre-Approval and Expense Approval reminders - The system will resend the approval email for any pre-approval and/or expense reports that have been in your approval queue longer than three days. Approvers must take action either by using the approval email or by logging into the Chrome River system to complete the approval process.
Wednesday mornings:
Unused Pcard Transactions – The system will send a listing of unreconciled Pcard charges that have been pending in excess of 30 days. Users must take action to reconcile the Pcard charges on either a Travel Expense Report or a Pcard Reconciliation (Non Travel) Report in Chrome River.
Unapproved Expense Items – The system will send a summary list of any items which have been pending your approval for longer than six days. Approvers must take action either by locating and using the approval email, or by logging into the Chrome River system to complete the approval process.
Participants needed for audiology research
You are invited to participate in a research study of Digit-Pair Speech Recognition Thresholds in Adults with Hearing Loss. We hope to learn the validation and generalization of using digit recognition thresholds during hearing evaluations.
If you decide to participate, you will be scheduled for a hearing evaluation. Once criteria are determined, additional hearing testing will be conducted.
Testing is expected to last about 55 minutes.

ACIREMA is an interactive workshop that walks you through the challenges international students experience as they seek an American education. Team of researchers from ME Department recognized at The Composites and Advanced Materials Expo 2019
Davood Askari and his students Ramanan Sritharan (Ph.D.) and Nicholas Reyes (undergraduate), were among the winners of the Technical Posters at "The Composites and Advanced Materials Expo (CAMX) 2019" that was held in Anaheim, California, last month. The title of their research poster was "Effects of Carbon Nanotubes Geometries on Flexural Properties and Shear Strength of Laminated Polymeric Nanocomposites."
Every year, CAMX recognizes outstanding composites research that will impact the next generation of composites innovation. CAMX technical sessions cover critical areas important to the composites and advanced materials industry from business, applications, and research perspectives. Poster sessions put the work of the next generation of researchers, engineers and industry professionals on display.

Industry Professional Panel to be featured Oct. 25
The Department of Industrial, Systems and Manufacturing Engineering will host an Industry Professional Panel at 3 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 25) in 123 Wallace Hall. All are welcome to come and hear about some ways a degree in Industrial Engineering or Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering can translate to a career.

To remind high school seniors – especially those from local schools –that it’s not too late to apply for admission and be considered for scholarships, the admissions team deployed new social media content recently. Each graphic features members of Student Ambassador Society who hail from local schools.

Attend the film event discussing Christianity in the Middle East
The Wichita State University Department of History and St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral invite you to the Middle East through Christian Eyes film event from 6:30-8 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 24) at WSU Old Town. The documentary shows are "The Last Plight" and "Silence After the Storm," directed by Sargon Saadi. A panel discussion will follow.
Sign up to judge the Wallace Invitational for Scholarships in Engineering (WISE)
We need your help! On Friday, Nov. 22, the College of Engineering will host its annual Wallace Invitational for Scholarships in Engineering (WISE), a scholarship competition for high school seniors interested in studying engineering or computer science. The top 10 students from the competition each receive a $28,500 Wallace Scholarship. This is the college’s largest recruitment event of the year – about 67% of participants end up attending Wichita State and pursuing a degree in the College of Engineering. Last year, we had 233 participants from 14 states.
We are seeking judges for the Group Design Challenge portion of the day. Two-person judging teams will be responsible for observing and scoring a small group of four-to-five students who will participate in a design-build challenge. Group members are judged on leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, so judges do not need to have a background in engineering or computer science.
The judging time commitment is from 9:30-11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, in the Rhatigan Student Center. If you are interested in being a judge, please sign up by Friday, Nov. 1 at www.wichita.edu/wisevolunteer.

Nominations open for Transition Mentor position
First-Year Programs in Student Success is seeking nominations for next year’s transition mentor staff! We are looking for exceptional students who are passionate about WSU and want to help welcome new students to our campus.
Transition Mentors are responsible for transitioning students to WSU beginning in the summer with orientation, and mentoring new freshmen throughout the fall semester.

Japanese Culture Association will host Japanese Culture Night
Japanese Culture Association (JCA) will host a Japanese Culture Night, showcasing performances ranging from traditional dances to martial arts demonstrations. There will also be performances from Wichita Asian Festival's Ms. Japan, and K-State's Yosakoi dance group. The event will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in the CAC Theater.
The event is free for WSU students and faculty, and $5 for outside guests, and $2 for children.
