General faculty meeting scheduled for Monday, Nov. 11
Faculty are encouraged to attend the General Faculty Meeting from 3:30-5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in the CAC Theater. Faculty will vote on revision to the general education program and the faculty workload policy. Both policies were based on the work of two ad hoc committees that met last year. The policies were reviewed and amended by the Faculty Senate. The agenda and items for consideration are available on the Faculty Senate website.
Longtime Shocker fan excited to be an adult learner at WSU
Eric Harrison is a jack of all trades and has many talents. After dabbling in construction work, being a mason and making stained glass artwork, he realized he was missing an education. For Eric, coming back to school at the age of 66 is the best thing he has done. Currently, he is getting his degree in philosophy and minors in English and psychology.

You are invited to a free documentary screening, ‘Chicago at the Crossroad’ today (Wednesday, Nov. 6)
You are invited to a free documentary screening hosted by multiple campus and community partners of “Chicago at The Crossroad,” a feature film that explores the history of housing segregation and violence in Chicago and America. A panel discussion will follow.
Film synopsis: Much is said about the violence that plagues segregated communities. But what is known about the systems that created it, the laws that isolated it, and the policies that abandoned it? And how does a city heal from decades of heartbreak and pain? A feature documentary filmed over the course of 15 years, “Chicago at the Crossroad” answers these questions, offering a penetrating look at the incessant segregation, violence, and disastrous public-policy decisions that affect Chicago and cities across the country.
The evening will start with a meet-and-greet, and then the documentary will begin at 6:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 6). Stick around for the panel after the film at 7:45 p.m. The panel will focus on both the documentary and its parallels to Wichita. The panel will include Brian Schodorf, producer and director of the film; Robert Weems, Williard W. Garvey Distinguished Professor of Business History; Angeline Johnson, Chief Opportunity Zone Officer; Brandon Johnson, City Councilmen District 1; and Lavonta Williams, former Councilmember for District 1 and serving as the moderator.

SEM Update: Goals 1 and 2
Carolyn Shaw, Associate Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Management, shares the following SEM Update for Goals 1 and 2:
Goal 1 Foster a culture of enrollment growth
- A growing number of faculty across campus are deeply engaged in advancing enrollment initiatives on campus. One example is our Faculty Fellows program that supports faculty in a variety of areas to recruit and retain students, and promote student success in many areas.
Goal 2 Increase enrollment of degree seeking underserved student populations
- We have been successfully growing our underserved student population in recent years
(see orange line in graph). Although this year saw a slight decrease when looking
at 1st generation, underrepresented minorities and low income students combined (see blue
bars in graph), we did see a 7.2% increase in Hispanic students, resulting in the
largest Hispanic population in the university’s history. Overall, underrepresented
minorities make up 20.3% of our undergraduate, degree-seeking population.

- Help foster a culture of enrollment growth through social media: Share / Re-tweet WSU content and amplify our outreach. WSU employees are influential recruiters when we share university successes with others in our social network.

- To Alicia Newell, Student Affairs, who welcomes parents at every orientation session and assures them that their students will be well cared for when they arrive on campus, and then makes good on this promise.
- To Keenan Jackson, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, who goes the extra mile in visiting with prospective students. Admissions reports that he always walks visitors back to the Marcus Welcome Center after meeting with them to make sure they don’t get lost. Great student service!
- To Sam Jones and Larry Burks, Military and Veteran Student Center, who always make time to meet with or talk on the phone with prospective students who have questions about military benefits.
- To Kayla Jasso, College of Applied Studies, who goes above and beyond to connect with both prospective and current students. She has attended every single Discover Wichita State event and exemplifies professionalism and excitement in her role, and is an excellent representative of WSU.

Human Factors Exploration Day this Friday
Are you interested in the intersection between people and technology? Then don’t miss Human Factors Exploration Day from noon-2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in 233 RSC.
The field of Human Factors focuses on designing usable technology that maximizes human performance. This includes autonomous vehicles, video games, mobile devices, web sites, healthcare systems, and more. The Human Factors psychology program is having an information session for students interested in adding Human Factors to their skill set.
Come and learn about our undergrad Certificate in Human Factors, as well as our Ph.D. program. See demonstrations from our six research labs, and meet with faculty and students. There will be food, too!

We are there every Tuesday and Wednesday from 1-3 p.m., and you can come see us at your convenience during that time. As a bonus, we will make sure you get fresh dry erase markers, an eraser, or some high-contrast chalk.
If we can't help you during lab time, we will make an appointment with you so you can sit down with an instructional designer and get your problems solved.

The competition is:
- For all members of the WSU community
- Open to proposals for new interdisciplinary certificates, minors, honors tracks, undergraduate, mini-master’s or master’s programs
- Focused on programs that meet the future needs of students and the community
The authors of the winning proposal will receive a combined cash award of $5,000. There also will be up to five reserved (red sign) parking places made available for the next academic year for use by the authors of the proposal, at no charge to them.
Proposals are due Friday, Nov. 29.

The WSU Office of Research is hosting a Research Workshop on applying to the American Chemical Society’s Petroleum Research Fund Grant Program from 2:30-4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in 313 RSC.
Coleen Pugh, WSU Graduate School Dean and Associate Vice President for Research & Economic Development, will share information about this grant program. Pugh has more than 30 years of experience in the research field of Polymer Science. She serves on the Board Standing Committee of the American Chemical Society’s Petroleum Research Fund, making funding recommendations in Polymer Science as a member of Science Committee 7. Please attend this research workshop to learn more about this funding opportunity, to refine your research ideas, and / or to have more success in applying to the ACS-PRF grant program.
Who should attend? WSU faculty interested in learning more about the ACS PRF grant program, including, but not limited to, WSU faculty researchers in the fields of chemistry, geology, engineering, materials science and physics, including those from non-Ph.D.-granting departments.

About ACF PRF Funding*:
The American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund is an endowed fund, managed by the American Chemical Society, that supports fundamental research directed related to petroleum or fossil fuels. Funds are intended as seed money, to enable a researcher to initiate a new research direction. The investigator should not have published or received financial support from another funding agency for the proposed research. Proposals must be for fundamental research in “the petroleum field” which is defined as “petroleum, natural gas, coal, shale, tar sands and like materials.” Funding amounts vary based on research types, from $55,00 -$110,000, inclusive of required student support.
Allowable research topics include: Synthetic organic chemistry, geochemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, surface science, chemical physics/physical chemistry, polymer science, geology and geophysics, chemical and petroleum engineering, and materials science. Application deadlines are typically in May and October.

Mikrokosmos Literary Journal, WSU's beloved literary magazine, is seeking poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and comic submissions from WSU students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Deadline to submit is Nov. 1.
Mikrokosmos is also hosting a fiction and poetry contest, judged by nationally-known fiction writer Amy Hempel and poet Sam Sax. The deadline for submitting to this contest is Nov. 15. Submission guidelines at http://mikrokosmosjournal.com/submit-2/. There will be cash prizes.

Distinguished organist to perform on the great Marcussen organ in Wiedemann Hall
The Rie Bloomfield Organ Series presents its second Distinguished Guest Artist, Dexter Kennedy, winner of the prestigious "Grand Prix" of the Chartres International Organ Competition, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Wiedemann Hall.
From Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Kennedy is a brilliant concert organist with degrees from Oberlin College and Yale University. As a church musician, Kennedy currently serves as the Assistant Organist of Christ Church Grosse Pointe (Michigan), where he serves as the principal organist for all choral services and concerts and directs the training of the novice boy and girl choristers.

Join USPTO and University Libraries for Trademark Tuesday on Nov. 12
The Rocky Mountain Regional U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will host an interactive session with experts from the USPTO's Trademark Assistance Center (TAC), which is based at USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in 217 Ablah Library. During this program, TAC experts will provide an introduction to trademark basics and discuss the trademark application process.

The first-place winner of the showcase competition will attend the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools 3MT Competition meeting in the spring.

World Kindness Week is coming Nov 11-15, and here at CAPS, we are hoping to spread some goodwill throughout campus with the help from each department. Each day, the Counseling and Prevention Services social media will post content to engage students, and we would love if your department could either share those posts on your respective social media, or share your own posts fostering kindness. Things we will post include positive messages, a Buzzfeed-style kindness quiz, philanthropic videos, memes about helping, etc. We will use #WSUWeSupportU and #ShockerKindnessWeek.
