Proposals are due to the Office of Research for Award for Research / Creative (ARC) projects no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7. The ARC provides funding of up to $4,000 to enable faculty to pursue research or creative projects during the summer. Proposers must work with a Grant Specialist in the Office of Research prior to submission, and all complete applications require an endorsement from the chair and dean. Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed or considered.

myPerformance Manager Review is due!
Managers of USS and non-teaching UP employees should now submit reviews and ratings for their direct reports for the 2019-20 annual evaluations in myPerformance. This step is due Saturday, Feb. 29. Managers should log in to myPerformance (through myWSU) to rate their direct reports and submit comments to justify the ratings.
NOTE: The Planning step for 2020-21 annual evaluations in myPerformance will also be available on Feb. 1. This will allow managers to potentially meet with their direct reports for the (2019-20) current end-of-review as well as the (2020-21) next cycle’s planning meeting at the same time, if desired.

Three high school seniors win $64,000 Gore scholarships to attend Wichita State
Wichita State University has selected the 2020 recipients of the Harry Gore Memorial Scholarships. Each student will receive a $64,000 scholarship to attend Wichita State University in August 2020.
The 2020 Gore Scholars are:

Do you know who Bayard Rustin is?
A Black History Month film and discussion: “Brother Outsider – The Life of Bayard Rustin” will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in 266 RSC.
Rustin shaped the Civil Rights Movement strategy as a longtime advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., and was known and respected by numerous US presidents and foreign leaders.
This documentary captures Rustin's commitment to pacifism and his visionary advocacy of Gandhian nonviolence, which made him a pioneer in the 1940s and captured King's imagination in the 1950s.
In 1963, Rustin was tapped by A. Philip Randolph to organize the historic March on Washington, the largest protest America had ever seen at the time. But Rustin was also seen as a political liability. He was openly gay during the fiercely homophobic era of the 40s and 50s and, as a result, was frequently shunned by the same movement he helped create.

Ulrich Museum invites WSU researchers to share their work at FUN events this semester

Introducing PechaKucha style presentations of campus-wide research: four presenters, seven minutes each. FUN events are a great way to publicize your research efforts and network across campus and beyond.

Shared Governance and the Shocker Circle
As an exercise in shared governance, a series of Shocker Circles were held in September 2019. First, “What is a Circle?” A Shocker Circle is a gathering of Shockers who, while sitting in circle, has the opportunity to speak about a single topic or run of questions of interest without interruption. A Circle facilitator supports the process and allows everyone an opportunity for full participation. A scribe records the responses.
There were three common questions that were asked during each of the 2019 Shocker Circles:
- What is something you value about the current decision-making process at the university?
- What can the university do to demonstrate respect, trust, and transparency in the decision-making process?
- How can the university best solicit input from staff, faculty, students, and administrators?
A summary report is now available.
In a continued effort to shape a culture of community and engaged listening, the trained Shocker Circle Keepers are available to host future circles. Please share your ideas or requests for future Shocker Circle topics or to learn more about how to become a Shocker Circle Keeper. Questions may be submitted to shocker.circle@wichita.edu.
First-generation college students take great pride in succeeding and graduating
Attend a brown-bag lunch and learn on “Becoming an Individual & Institutional Advocate for First-generation College Students.” Join the First Gen Coordinating Council at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, in 233 RSC for a brown bag lunch webinar and brief Q&A session.
Colleges and universities have an opportunity to shift the paradigm of support for first-generation college students from a deficit approach. First-generation college students take great pride in succeeding and graduating (Gibbons & Woodside, 2014). However, first-generation students “who dropped out of college believed they needed to figure out how to do college on their own” (Lightweis, 2014, p. 466). Instead, when higher education institutions shift this paradigm, they have an opportunity to not only improve retention rates, but also provide a holistic support system for student success.
This live briefing will focus on opportunities for students and academic affairs professionals of all functional areas and levels to become individual and institutional advocates for first-generation student success.

Call for presentations for Gender & Sexuality in Kansas Conference
Save the date and help spread the news that the call for presentations for the 7th Annual Gender & Sexuality in Kansas Conference on Friday, March 13. Find more information and the CFP link at https://www.wichita.edu/genderconference.
We invite submissions of original research and scholarship from any discipline.
Submit a 200-300-word summary of your proposed presentation including topic and/or research questions, methodology and a summary of findings or main themes to be addressed in the presentation.
Presentation formats include traditional presentations are oral with a length of 15-20 minutes, and include a visual aid of some sort (power point, video, poster). Workshops may be longer and usually include an interactive component. Presenters may be individuals or groups.
The deadline for submissions is Sunday, Feb. 16.
This year’s keynote will be Sarah Deer, citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma, professor at KU in the School of Public Affairs and Administration and 2019 National Women’s Hall of Fame inductee.
We hope that you will consider submitting a proposal and share information about the conference with your fellow students, colleagues and others across campus or the Wichita community who may be interested.

SLI Squad Leader applications sought
Are you interested in leadership development of yourself and your students? We are calling for five cluster facilitators at the 2020 Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) this year. The five-day event will take place May 18-22.
We will host a few meetings leading up to the event to discuss logistics and preparations for the week. This week is time spent developing yourself as well as mentoring our students through their leadership journey. You’ll be part of community building and leadership exploration both during the institute and when we return to campus.

The Kansas NSF EPSCoR Annual MAPS Research Symposium will be held Monday, March 2, at the KU Adams Alumni Center, 1266 Oread Ave., Lawrence, Kansas. You are invited to attend due to your association with Kansas NSF EPSCoR.
There will be a welcome reception the evening before (Sunday, March 1) at the Oread Hotel (1200 Oread Ave., Lawrence, KS).

Student Support Services (SSS) is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide free academic services to students from First-Generation (FG) and Limited- Income (LI) backgrounds, as well as students with disabilities.

Faculty advisor needed for new chapter of Phi Sigma Pi
Phi Sigma Pi is a gender-inclusive National Honor Fraternity established in 1916. Faculty Advisors play an important role in the Collegiate Chapter by building a bridge between the local chapter and the university community. Responsibilities of the faculty advisor include:
- Assisting the chapter with day-to-day operation questions
- Provide guidance to chapter officers and committee chairs
- Encourage smart financial decisions
- Promote Phi Sigma Pi to other students on campus
- Attend meetings, ceremonies, and events when possible

Shocker Innovation Corps applications due soon
The Shocker Innovation Corps nurtures and supports Wichita State entrepreneurial teams interested in accelerating their STEM ideas, research and product commercialization. Ideas / projects can originate from student or faculty work, research and institutional / industrial projects.
Applications for the Shocker I-Corps program for the spring 2020 cohort are due Wednesday, Feb. 12. Applicants who are accepted will receive up to $2,150 in seed funding, as well as mentoring from local experts, access to entrepreneurial resources, networking with the local innovation ecosystem, and customer validation training.
