Email change

Increased protections announced for WSU email

Starting Monday, March 9, changes will be implemented to the WSU email system to make it easier to identify phishing emails. Like the example in the image above, a yellow warning bar will be added to emails coming into WSU to identify the email as originating from outside the university.

This is designed to limit the success of phishing emails that attempt to impersonate people from the university. This will help decrease the risk to our personnel from phishing fraud attempts that have increased. In the coming days we will send more general awareness on phishing as part of this effort. None of these changes will impact messages sent by WSU Today, Constant Contact, Blackboard, financial aid or other emails sent on behalf of WSU. Student email accounts will not receive this banner at this time.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact Mark Rodee, chief information security officer, at mark.rodee@wichita.edu or 978-3900.

ISME Colloquium on LoRaWAN for Smart Campus Development by Michael Milhon

Michael Milhon will present “LoRaWAN for Smart Campus Development” at the ISME Colloquium from 11 a.m.-noon today (Friday, March 6) in 211 Engineering Building.

Most people are familiar with WiFi, Bluetooth, and RFID, but have no exposure to Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANS). LPWANS are not going to replace other wireless technologies we are used to, but they will augment them. They are best suited for environmental sensors, asset tracking, and smart metering. This presentation explains LoRaWAN and how anyone can use the community gateway which covers most of Wichita State University main campus and part of the neighborhood to the south for research and general use. This is a quickly evolving Industry 4.0 hot topic, and LoRaWAN is an area of IoT where a competitive business may be started with a low cost of entry.

Bio: Mike Milhon is an adjunct CATIA instructor for WSU-Tech and has been in this role for seven years. He is a part-time employee of the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State. He has worked there for eight years, including four on location at Beechcraft.

Art plus feminism Ulrich

Come join the Ulrich Museum of Art for a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today (Friday, March 6). The Ulrich event will focus on the entries for about a dozen female artists featured in the museum’s permanent collection.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own laptop. Refreshments, free wi-fi, and curated research material will be provided. Space is limited, so those interested in volunteering should reserve a spot by emailing Ulrich.Intern@wichita.edu.

Frigidaire Finale (1957) (3 min.)

In 1957, a ballet Frigidaire Finale is performed amidst a group of stubbornly inert refrigerators. Call it a futile mating ritual. The advertising agency clearly suggested that the frisson would rub o on the Frigidaires. But there they sit, true to their name, frigid, frozen in place – their ori ces, doors, and drawers, awkwardly ung open by the increasingly desperate dancers.

However, in the last 60 years, a remarkable transformation has taken place – the appliances themselves (and their corporate parents) have become the seducers, both commodity and salesperson in one, promising happiness only to take our money.

Product Review for Mattel’s Hello Barbie (9:15 min.)

One such device is a sweet android for pre-teens, a Hello Barbie doll that retails for $74.99. Mattel Inc. has worked its magic on the star of an unboxing video who succumbs to the charms of her new toy, hyperventilating as she frees her Barbie from its pink plastic sarcophagus and reads the user manual with the gravity of a nuclear code.

Hello Barbie speaks to her owner, Kelsie, in a conversational mode. She socializes Kelsie but does so into her mechanized doll’s world, which is not human. I wondered as I listened to Kelsie’s at singsong voice and watched her furiously working with purple-painted nails: is this a real girl? Has she taken on so many of Barbie’s traits that she has become indistinguishable from her? A Barbie operating a Barbie in a recursive loop? What do you think?

“Valerie 23” from The Outer Limits (1995) directed by Timothy Bond (44:20 min.)

Even before she was implanted with a networked neural circuitry, Barbie already embodied the inorganic ideal of the woman echoed in Valerie, a life-size Barbie, in The Outer Limits episode “Valerie 23” (1995). Valerie is described as a prototype inorganic human, the perfect housewife who is, in her own words, “fully functional” in the bedroom and programmed to feel a rich palette of emotions. But what happens when, confronted with a rival, she feels too much?

Men's basketball parking Nov. 2019

WSU Men's Basketball home game Sunday, March 8! Prepare for certain parking lot closures

Prepare for certain parking lot closures three hours prior to game time tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 27). Unauthorized vehicles must vacate the lots prior to the scheduled closure time in order to avoid receiving a parking citation.

Look at the map above to make alternative parking arrangements if necessary.

Arrive on campus earlier than usual. Buy yourself some time in case you need to park farther away from your desired destination than normal.

Dress for the weather in case you need to walk a little farther than usual, or need to wait a few minutes for a shuttle to take you to your desired destination.

Consider carpooling. Not only does this reduce our carbon footprint, but it also reduces traffic and parking congestion.

Take advantage of the many routes and inexpensive fares Wichita Transit has to offer.

Should you need accommodations because of a disability, call Disability Services at 978-3309.

For parking questions, call OneStop at 978-4775.
