Zoom Alert changes

Alert: Zoom security changes

In response to recent incidents of Zoom bombing of campus meetings, the ability to disable the use of a password for a meeting has been turned off in the university’s Zoom accounts.

This means that zoom events that have been created with the password disabled will now require passwords.

This does NOT mean that users will always need to manually enter a password as they enter an event.  If meeting hosts share updated meeting invitation information, the new link to the meeting will include the password, and no manual entry will be required.

If it is easier to provide a password than it is to update the invitation information, meeting passwords can be found in the invitation to the meeting, or by opening the “Participants” tool in the zoom session and clicking on “invite.”

Meeting attendees who can’t access an event because they don’t have the password or an updated meeting URL will need to contact the host for that information.

To find out more information about Zoom security, go to wichita.edu/zoomsafe.

Usha Haley

Wichita State’s Usha Haley profiled on Meat-Processing plant COVID breakouts – South Dakota Public Radio

Last week, South Dakota’s Smithfield pork-processing plant experienced the largest COVID-19 breakout in the United States to date. Public Radio turned to Usha Haley, W. Frank Barton Distinguished Chair in International Business, Professor of Management and Director of the Center for International Business Advancement for her analysis.

One of the world’s leading authorities on Chinese business, Usha had testified on her research to US Congress, advocating against the takeover of Smithfield by the Chinese-government-connected Shuanghui Group. Seven years later, her testimony based on her expertise is heralded as landmark in one of the most significant cases on foreign direct investment in the United States.

Dr. Haley’s Congressional testimony has been covered widely around the world and is accessible here

The radio interview from South Dakota Public Radio is available in its entirety here in print form. you can also tune in for a six-minute radio excerpt at the link. Given the importance and extent of the outbreak, this is a national story: excerpts are playing across radio stations in the United States and globally.

Dr. Haley encourages support for local public radio stations like KMUW for fair and balanced reporting.

Beoshock new user training with expert Kyle Hutson, BeoShock System Administrator, will be available at 3 p.m. Friday, April 24 via Zoom.

Agenda: The first hour will be an introduction to Linux and HPC in general. It will be mostly show-and-tell, discussing overarching concepts. This will be particularly useful for people coming to Beoshock from a Windows or Mac background.

The second hour will be more hands-on. We will discuss Beoshock in particular, how to submit a job, request specific resources, etc. Have your computer ready to log in. We won't get into the complexities of writing multi-node code, but we will talk about using some of them.

Join Kyle Hutson on Zoom.

Summer Research Institute April 2020 story

Summer Research Institute provides early exposure for new students

Many Wichita State University freshmen enter college with undecided majors. WSU offers programs that expose students to different fields of work so they will be informed when deciding on their major. One of these programs is the Summer Research Institute.

The Summer Research Institute is a Kansas Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Incoming first-year WSU students or community college transfers interested in STEM majors spend a week engaged in research-focused academic seminars and collaborating in a faculty’s research laboratory at Wichita State. Throughout the experience, students problem-solve, exercise critical thinking skills and begin to establish relationships with peers and faculty.

Through this program, students receive invaluable training and networking. Faculty connect with bright and determined students.

Brian Miller story

COVID-19 creates new challenges for home health care workers

While hospitals and doctors’ offices are seen as the battlegrounds against COVID-19, there’s another group of medical professionals who are also on the front line: home health care workers.

Dr. Brian Miller – director of therapy and of for Wichita-based Love My Nurse Home Health and owner of Miller Contract Therapy – played a vital role in his patients’ health care, even before the pandemic hit.

“I am responsible for ensuring our patients receive appropriate health care interventions, which include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and social work,” said Dr. Miller, who graduated from Wichita State University in 2011 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.

But COVID-19 brought a new set of concerns and challenges to Miller’s home health care colleagues.
