COVID-19 and Internet challenges

VinodNamboodiri

Vinod Namboodiri

A live Zoom discussion is planned from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 29.

1) What are the common Internet access issues you are likely to face when working from home?

2) How does streaming live video (as used in Zoom meetings) differ from stored playback multimedia (such as YouTube and NetFlix)? How do network requirements vary based on these different video usage scenarios?

3) How can you troubleshoot and fix simple network issues at home, and when is investment in additional infrastructure appropriate?

4) How has mass work-from-home impacted the Internet over the past few weeks?

More information

Come join the CS 736 Data Communications Network class’s live Zoom session for a discussion of these and other Internet-related questions that may have come up due to the COVID-19 pandemic and dependence of entire households on online services. The live session is intended for the general audience to get some answers to their Internet-related challenges while also providing the students in the class a chance for experiential learning of the related technical issues.

The discussions will be led by Professor Vinod Namboodiri from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; you may reach him at vinod.namboodiri@wichita.edu if you have any questions about the session.

Open / Alternative Textbook application forms open

Open / Alternative Textbook (OAT) application forms open

The Open / Alternative Textbook (OAT) initiative is designed to promote, incentivize, and grow the use of freely available resources in WSU classes to reduce the economic impact of textbook costs on the student body.

The project has two elements:

  1. OAT Course Designation: Provides an incentive to faculty based on a $10/student course fee, which will be applied to an approved course that is using Open / Alternative textbooks that have no cost to the students. This money is split between the department offering the course (60%) and the Open / Alternative Textbook grant program (40%).
  2. OAT Grant Program: Provides $2,000-5,000 grants to faculty who apply for the grant to redesign a course with no-cost resources, or to write or contribute to an open educational resource, or other alternative text that can be provided to the students free of charge. These grants are funded by the course fees.

The OAT Initiative will be managed by Academic Affairs. OAT Course Designations and Grant Applications will be submitted via web form and reviewed by a panel be made up of: Two faculty members (appointed by Faculty Senate), a representative from University Libraries , a representative from Instructional Design and Access, at least one student (appointed by SGA), and the Associate Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Management (ex officio).

Apply NOW Grant applications and Spring 2021 course designations due May 1 for AY 2020-21.

RESEARCH

Research proves that authenticity boosts businesses

Lynn Matthews

Lynn Matthews

Authenticity is intangible. We know it when we see it, but it’s difficult to define.

Dr. A. Lynn Matthews, assistant professor of marketing at Wichita State University, set out to quantify that her research article “When and how frontline service employee authenticity influences purchase intentions,” published in the Journal of Business Research.

Matthews and her co-authors made quantitative measurements of the impact of having a service provider be authentic on purchase intentions from that service provider.

Students can use summer to stay on track and plan for next year's success!

While summer break is typically when students traditionally take time to relax, go on vacation or work extra hours, this summer presents interesting potential for students to stay on track and plan early for next academic year. Participating in applied learning experiences, taking summer courses and researching careers are just a few ways students can keep the momentum toward graduation going.

If students choose to gain some ground during the summer, their student experience may very well improve. Encourage students to continue to use resources such as academic advisors, success coaches, career counselors and specialists and financial aid staff among others who will remain available throughout the summer.
