The College of Applied Studies stands with those affected by injustice

The College of Applied Studies has recently taken new actions as it stands with those affected by injustice. The college released a statement June 2 affirming its support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The college also hosted a forum Friday, June 5 in which students, faculty and staff shared thoughts, feelings and ideas in a safe space.

An immediate result of last week’s dialogue is the college is expanding student membership on its Diversity Committee. This week’s Diversity Committee meeting will debrief from the dialogue to identify additional specific follow up actions to include a series of college-level commitments relating to social justice. Please follow the college on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

See the college statement below.

Standing in Solidarity

The College of Applied Studies stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and other struggles to end the dehumanization of people of color while promoting equitable and humane treatment for all people.

As a college, we are committed to continuing the work our Diversity Committee started many years ago by emphasizing the entire spectrum of diversity and ensuring our students, faculty, staff, practitioner partners, and the greater Wichita community feel included, heard, seen, and acknowledged as we seek to bring about change.

In alignment with Wichita State University’s commitment to inclusive excellence, we, as a college, will provide safe spaces for all people to have crucial conversations; support our staff, faculty, students, and communities to address social injustices; and continue to keep the Black Lives Matter movement and other efforts promoting the equitable treatment for people of color as vital voices in our actions moving forward.

RSC

Room reservations in the Rhatigan Student Center

The Rhatigan Student Center is now taking reservations for meeting rooms within the building. RSC meeting rooms will be set in a semi-permanent room set based on specific room size and an altered capacity with consideration given to the need for six-foot social distancing within each room. This semi-permanent room set gives staff the ability to maintain, clean and secure each room between meetings.

For more information on room set-ups, please visit wichita.edu/eventservices. To make a reservation, call 316-978-3475 or email letsmeet@wichita.edu.

Grant for PPE

Wichita State receives grant to make more PPE

Wichita State University’s Office of Tech Transfer and Commercialization has received a $37,000 grant that will go toward making more personal protective equipment (PPE) to health care workers with low supply caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.

The grant is from NetWork Kansas, with funding provided by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS). The grants are being awarded to colleges and small businesses in Kansas that are making PPE for the health care industry during this time.

Examples of PPE currently being created at Wichita State include temporary face shields and disposable stethoscopes. Counties across Kansas have received shipments of PPE since April.

RESEARCH

IRB develops guidelines to restore human subject research involving person-to-person interactions

Dear WSU Researchers,

The WSU Institutional Review Board has developed guidelines to restore human subject research that involves direct person-to-person interactions. The IRB’s main purpose is to protect the welfare of human subjects recruited to participate in research activities at WSU. As the current pandemic has created additional levels of risk associated with person-to-person interaction, the IRB is striving to maximize the safety of participants as well as researchers.

Restoration will consist of three phases that are meant to reflect the currently recommended practices for the university community. Phase 1 is effective immediately. Phases 2 and 3 will be authorized as conditions improve.

WuShock in Alaska

WuShock travels through Alaska

Tobin Hushower, an incoming freshman from Palmer, Alaska, recently took WuShock on a tour of his hometown. Wu took in the sights of an avalanche area, mountains, some major snow piles, and nearly got in trouble for sledding on a roadway. Tobin was a finalist in the Distinguished Scholarship Invitational, plans to major in aerospace engineering, and is looking forward to getting involved in Esports and student organizations.

Thanks to Tobin and his mother for sending these pictures to the Admissions staff! We hope Tobin is as excited for August as we are!
