Deadline approaching to change to online course designation
All traditional course instruction (TCI) classes have been changed to hybrid (HYB) for the fall semester. Notify the Registrar’s Office at schedulebuilding@wichita.edu before Friday, June 26 if you plan to change your course to IIE (fully online, asynchronous).
The online fees for IIE courses provide support for many online resources, including instructional designers and our Bb platform that benefit all classes on campus. Existing IIE and HYO courses will remain coded as IIE and HYO.
In support of the activities to close out fiscal year 2020, registration for summer 2020 will be closed from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, through 6 p.m. Thursday, June 25. This will NOT impact registration for fall 2020 – registration/drop/add for fall will be as normal.
If you have any questions or problems during this summer registration outage, please contact the Registrar’s office at 978-3090.
WSU announces changes to popular Lifelong Learning classes
As part of the university’s continued commitment to Lifelong Learning, Wichita State will be offering 10 new Lifelong Learning classes for senior citizens this fall. Due to COVID-19 concerns, adjustments have been made to content delivery to ensure students safety and comfort level in participating in these classes.
New this year, classes will be offered both in person and online, making the courses available and accessible to senior citizens statewide.
All in-person classes will be held at Wichita State University’s Metropolitan Complex, located at 5015 E. 29th St. N., Wichita, KS 67220. No Lifelong Learning classes will be held at senior centers or retirement communities this semester. In person class capacity will be limited to the current state and local guidelines on gatherings and social distancing and in person registrations will be accepted on a first come basis.
Lifelong Learning classes will also be made available online through YouTube. Students who select this option will receive a link via email each week to view the class on their own device. Students can choose to watch the link live during the class time or can watch the recording at their convenience.
Residents and members of the community 60 years of age or older can audit these classes without paying tuition. WSU has scholarship money available to cover workshop fees for students enrolling prior to Sept. 11, 2020. After that date, some workshop fees may apply. Although geared toward the senior citizen population, anyone younger than 60 can enroll in the classes if they pay regular tuition and fees.
“In 2019, total class registrations exceeded 2,000. Due to the success of the program and overwhelming interest in these classes, we continue to look for ways to increase course offerings as well as make courses more accessible to the senior community” said Kimberly Moore, director of WSU’s Office for Workforce, Professional and Community Education (WPCE). “I am very excited that by offering the courses online, seniors statewide can now enroll and participate no matter where they live. We value our seniors and are excited to continue to provide them with high quality, engaging and meaningful educational opportunities.”

Reminder of Workplace Injury Procedures
Student Health Services and the HR Total Rewards team would like to remind all employees and supervisors of the process for workplace injuries. Student Health Services is unable to provide treatment for work-related injuries or illnesses, including for student employees who are injured at work. For non-emergency workplace injuries, treatment must be authorized by the State Self Insurance Fund (SSIF) before the employee reports for treatment.
In all cases, the employee should send a completed Accident or Illness Report as soon as possible, and no later than three business days following the injury. The employee’s supervisor must also call SSIF at 785-296-2364 to make a first report of injury, even if medical treatment is not required. Remember, all employees are subject to workers compensation protections, including student and temporary employees.
A handy quick-reference guide is available online, and supervisors are encouraged to keep this posted in work areas.
Congratulations to Ms. Deltha Q. Colvin, 2020 NCCEP/ GEAR UP Professional of the Year!
Deltha Q. Colvin
The National Council for Community and Educational Partnerships in Washington, D.C., announced that Wichita State’s Deltha Q. Colvin was named 2020 NCCEP / GEAR UP Professional of the Year.
As we all know, this year is different, but that does not mean we should not celebrate outstanding individuals in our communities. However, because we will not be convening in-person at the NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference, we will be celebrating our award winners in a different format. The Professional of the Year award will be formally announced in August.
‘Liberation psychology, theory, method, practice, and social justice’
This edited book by Lillian Comas-Diaz and Edil Torres Rivera, who is professor, Latinx Studies and Counseling at Wichita State, invites the reader to expand their perspective on oppression and liberation. The book discusses liberation psychology, a discipline that encourages empowerment, healing, and transformation.
Liberation psychology refers to the use of psychological approaches to understand and address oppression among individuals and groups. Liberation psychologists view oppression as the interaction of intrapsychic factors with systemic factors, such as socio-political injustice.
