SPSS now available for remote work by faculty and students

ITS offers alternative access options for IBM SPSS/AMOS statistical software for faculty, staff and students.

Option 1 On-Premise and Remote Access: ITS has installed SPSS/AMOS in designated labs and on WSU-owned desktop / laptops computers of faculty and staff who have requested on-premise access. This option allows you to have access to SPSS/AMOS software on your WSU-owned computer with access to your files and network shares.

If you remote to your WSU computer via the authorized virtual private network (VPN) when away from campus, you will still have access to the installed SPSS/AMOS software on your WSU computer and access to your data files, including network shares.

If you would like to have SPSS/AMOS installed on your WSU computer, please submit the ticket by clicking on Help Me Set Up.

Clash of the Colleges is here!

It's on! In-person & Virtual Clash of the Colleges begins today (Friday, Aug. 21). This event will include relay races, team sports, and a competition between academic colleges to determine who rules the school.

All students that signed up to participate in person should receive an email confirmation to your Shocker Student account. Check your email prior to arriving for today's event. Please remember to wear face coverings to the event. Participants who received a spot will arrive at the north gate of Cessna Stadium at the time posted in their email. Enjoy an afternoon of interactive socially distanced fun!

Sign up for Rocket League Tournament for Virtual Clash of the Colleges!

Interested in getting points for your college for Clash of the Colleges? We will host multiple virtual games! Our virtual games will start today (Friday, Aug. 21) and end on Monday, Sept. 14.

One of the virtual games we will host is a Rocket League competition. Registration for e-gaming is open now! You can compete on PC, Xbox, or PS4. There will be tournaments for each level you reach. Points will be given based on the levels you reach.

The final four and championship match will be live streamed on WSU-TV, and also at Fuzzy's! A live bracket of the tournament will be displayed in the Heskett Center.

Registration is open now, and the deadline to register is 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21.

Instructors: Join CAPS in supporting students' well-being

Join Counseling and Preventions Services in efforts to support WSU students' well-being by participating in the #WeSupportU Classroom Wellness Study.

Instructors who volunteer will be provided a deck of activity cards, and corresponding instructions to engage in activities in their classes designed to increase mental wellness. There are a variety of activities, and they can be completed in about five minutes. The exercises are simple (ex: belly breathing for two minutes).

If an instructor signs up, their students will have the option to engage in the project, which would include short pre- and post-tests. The instructor can use up to two exercises a week.

We are also seeking some instructors who sign up for a control group. We believe this project could assist in keeping students engaged in class, retained at WSU, and increase student wellness.

NAVY SBIR/STTR Program Director Robert Smith will address changes to Navy’s SBIR/STTR program and the $350 million in non-dilutive funds available to small businesses from 10-11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. There is no charge for the event, but registration is required.

Register for free Ulrich Virtual talk featuring renowned conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas with Dr. Deborah Willis

The Ulrich Museum of Art is excited to host a free virtual talk with conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas in conversation with artist/scholar Dr. Deborah Willis.

The program is free and open to the public and begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25. Registration is required in order to get the Zoom link.

Thomas is an American conceptual artist working primarily with themes related to perspective, identity, media, and popular culture. He is one of the artists currently featured in the Museum's Ulrich + Artists + You Community Billboard Project (his billboard is located at 308 N. West St.). He is also the co-founder of For Freedoms, a platform for creative civic engagement, discourse, and direct action.

As an artist, author and curator, Dr. Deborah Willis' art and pioneering research has focused on cultural histories envisioning the black body, women and gender. She is a celebrated photographer, acclaimed historian of photography, MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellow, and University Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

The First-Year Seminar (FYS) is a growing program at Wichita State; next academic year all incoming first-year students will be taking an FYS course. Which means now is the time to join the FYS team!

Perspectives on the Pandemic series returns with more experts and viewpoints

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, faculty experts in the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wichita State University are studying the way populations have reacted and adapted.

Presentations in the Perspectives on the Pandemic: Part II series feature a political scientist, sociologist, criminologist, health disparities panel, and performing arts panel. Each event will be delivered via Zoom and hosted by Andrew Hippisley, dean and professor of linguistics.

Needing to learn how to create a Purchase Requisition or want a refresher on how to enter a requisition in Banner? Plan to attend Purchase Requisition Training scheduled at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26.

• Banner 9 Purchase Requisition forms
• Purchasing and Finance Reporting

First-Year Programs in Student Success invites you to join our Syllabus Party on Tuesday, Aug. 25 in person, or online on Thursday, Aug. 27. Bring your class syllabi and your planners (electronic or paper) and we will provide the rest.

Scheduled, in-person attendees will receive goodies, light refreshments and peer support to help you get organized for the fall semester. Social distancing will be practiced, and each student is required to wear a face covering. To reserve your time at the party, click here.

Christian Science Monitor approaches WSU’s Usha Haley to speak on a new America

The seven-time Pulitzer Prize winning Christian Science Monitor (not a religious newspaper) approached WSU’s Usha Haley, W. Frank Barton Distinguished Chair in International Business, for her views on Senator Kamala Harris’s nomination by the Democratic Party to the position of Vice President of the USA.

An Indian American, who came to the US when she was 17, Dr. Haley’s research on trade has been incorporated into federal regulation in the US and several other countries. Although regularly featured in the major media on her expertise, Dr. Haley rarely gives interviews on her personal life. This time she made an exception.

TIAA Financial Consultants are available to help with virtual meetings

TIAA Financial Consultants are available to help participants in the Kansas Board of Regents retirement plan with virtual meetings to confirm they are on track for retirement, discuss market volatility, and consider recommendations on how to invest their funds.

These virtual meetings are private and secure, with only the employee and the Financial Consultant joining the virtual meeting. Through a computer or tablet, participants are able to see the Financial Consultant as they talk, and the consultant can share information on their screen to create an experience very similar to a traditional face to face meeting. WSU Tennis Clinics at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex:

Shocker Tennis Coaches Danny Bryan and Colin Foster will host junior tennis clinics this fall.

Beginners / Intermediate (ages 3-10): MWF 9:45-10:45 a.m. and 5:15-6:15 p.m. Sunday 2-3 p.m. Cost is $15 per day.

Intermediate / Advanced (ages 8-14): MWF 4:45-6:45 p.m. Sunday 2-4 p.m. Cost is $40 per day.

Keep our sidewalks safe! 

 

Please be considerate of sharing the sidewalks with those who choose to ride skateboards and electric skateboards. The WSU Police Department encourages safety for all on campus and are already receiving complaints about skateboards both on the roadways and the sidewalks. 

Please familiarize yourself with the university parking regulations safety policy that applies to skateboards.

10.0     Skateboards, longboards, scooters and coasters are authorized for transportation purposes only on the University campus (see Article 2.1) except in residential areas defined by Housing and Residence Life, and for special events approved by the University President.

10.1     The use of skateboards, longboards, coasters, and roller skates on campus is limited to paved right-of-ways and sidewalks.

10.2     Skateboards, longboards, coasters, roller skates, scooters, or other skating devices shall not be ridden inside any University building, parking garage and/or shall not be used for stunts on any steps, retaining or landscape walls, benches, or handrails on the University campus.
