Women's Equality Day Panel to discuss women’s right to vote and more
Women's Equality Day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, granting some women the right to vote. The amendment was first introduced in 1878. In 1971, the US Congress designated Aug. 26 as Women's Equality Day.
Hear from panelists on the history and the journey of women's right to vote and what more must be done to engage women to run for office at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26 at this digital event (via Livestream).

Come teach a First-Year Seminar course

The First-Year Seminar (FYS) is a growing program at Wichita State; next academic year all incoming first-year students will be taking an FYS course. Which means now is the time to join the FYS team!
Aaron Rife (FYS faculty coordinator) will hold a question-and-answer zoom session at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Instructors: Join CAPS in supporting students' well-being
Join Counseling and Preventions Services in efforts to support WSU students' well-being by participating in the #WeSupportU Classroom Wellness Study.
Instructors who volunteer will be provided a deck of activity cards, and corresponding instructions to engage in activities in their classes designed to increase mental wellness. There are a variety of activities, and they can be completed in about five minutes. The exercises are simple (ex: belly breathing for two minutes).
If an instructor signs up, their students will have the option to engage in the project, which would include short pre- and post-tests. The instructor can use up to two exercises a week.
We are also seeking some instructors who sign up for a control group. We believe this project could assist in keeping students engaged in class, retained at WSU, and increase student wellness.

Talk on COVID-19 and its effect on democracy around the world kicks off second 'Perspectives
on the Pandemic' series
Beyond the effects on health, the COVID-19 pandemic has had huge effects on the economy, but also on politics in countries around the world. More specifically, in certain countries, it has impacted democracy in a negative way. This presentation at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, will examine the overall impact of the pandemic on countries with democratic regimes, with emphasis on the democratic backsliding that has occurred in some of them.
The presentation is titled “Democracy in the world in times of COVID-19,” by Dinorah Azpuru, professor of political science.
Office hours are student hours
Successful students ask for help. Often, our students don’t ask because they don’t understand how, or know where to go. One way to help them feel more empowered to ask for help is to reconsider the term “office hours.” As faculty and staff, we know those hours are when instructors set aside time to help students. But to students, many of whom are first-generation, they may be interpreted as hours that instructors are working and should not be bothered. You can help students feel more confident in communicating with their instructors by explaining that “office” hours really mean “student” hours.

The Ulrich Museum of Art is excited to host a free virtual talk with conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas in conversation with artist/scholar Dr. Deborah Willis.
The program is free and open to the public and begins at 6 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Aug. 25). Registration is required in order to get the Zoom link.
Thomas is an American conceptual artist working primarily with themes related to perspective, identity, media, and popular culture. He is one of the artists currently featured in the Museum's Ulrich + Artists + You Community Billboard Project (his billboard is located at 308 N. West St.). He is also the co-founder of For Freedoms, a platform for creative civic engagement, discourse, and direct action.
As an artist, author and curator, Dr. Deborah Willis' art and pioneering research has focused on cultural histories envisioning the black body, women and gender. She is a celebrated photographer, acclaimed historian of photography, MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellow, and University Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

TIAA Financial Consultants are available to help participants in the Kansas Board of Regents retirement plan with virtual meetings to confirm they are on track for retirement, discuss market volatility, and consider recommendations on how to invest their funds.
These virtual meetings are private and secure, with only the employee and the Financial Consultant joining the virtual meeting. Through a computer or tablet, participants are able to see the Financial Consultant as they talk, and the consultant can share information on their screen to create an experience very similar to a traditional face to face meeting.
