Happy International Women's Day - Wichita State University - wichita.edu/WWSU

Happy International Women's Day from Women of WSU

Happy International Women's Day! Here is a little Wichita State women's history story for you to help commemorate Wichita State's 125th anniversary this year. The Women of Wichita State University (WWSU) was formed on July 1, 2018 with the merger of two organizations; Women's Association (WA) formed in 1928 and Council of University Women (CUW) formed in 1930. Each organization was established to foster fellowship and friendliness among the female faculty, faculty wives and staff while raising funds for scholarships for female students and WWSU continues with this tradition by encouraging and supporting women of all backgrounds.

Both WA and CUW have established endowed general scholarships for non traditional female students which continue to be awarded each year. In continuing with its philanthropic mission, WWSU established a third scholarship to be awarded annually to non-traditional female graduate or undergraduate students with a minimum 3.0 GPA and enrolled in at least six credit hours per semester. Watch for information about these scholarships after our annual fundraiser to be held in late March.

Seminar focuses on weather prediction, resilience

Dr. Russ Schumacher will speak at the DRAC Seminar series, "Advancing understanding and prediction of high-impact weather, and implications for resilience," at 11 a.m. Friday, March 12.

Weather and climate have wide-ranging impacts on society, especially associated with the natural hazards produced by storms. These impacts range from fatalities and property destruction, to infrastructure damage, to disruptions to the economy. Major advances have been made in the understanding and prediction of hazardous weather in recent decades, which has been termed a quiet revolution. This allows for much more accurate weather forecasts that are capable of reducing the impacts on society. However, some of the most hazardous weather occurs on small time and space scales (for example, tornadoes and flash floods), or on large time and space scales (for example, drought) that are the least predictable.

There are also challenges with adequately disseminating and communicating forecast and warning information to vulnerable communities. This presentation will address some of the advances and remaining challenges in two specific areas. Flash flooding, which is among the deadliest weather hazards, naturally requires interdisciplinary approaches, because it involves meteorology, hydrology, urban planning, ecology, and more.

Schumacher is associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University and also serves as the Colorado State Climatologist and directory of the Colorado Climate Center.
