Goal 11: Increase graduate recruitment and retention
- We have seen the most growth in non-degree bound graduate students in recent years, with an increase in masters’ students, and the number of doctoral students holding steady. Many of these non-degree bound students are pursuing certificates or are taking classes for the purpose of professional development.
Recruitment and Retention Tips:
- Invite your qualified undergraduate students to consider applying for admission to your graduate program.
- Provide regular and frequent advising for graduate students, beginning with a robust program orientation and continuing throughout to graduation.
- Host mini job fairs to help graduates explore careers inside and outside academia and become career-ready.
SEM Shout Out:
- To Ashlie Jack, College of Applied Studies, who has greatly improved CAS’s ability to track and matriculate market-based tuition students through CAS’s new centralized process. She’s been vital in helping convert these students into degree bound graduate students when possible.
- To Gery Markova, Master of Human Resource Management Graduate Coordinator, and the Management department faculty for finding a market need and building a program to meet that need.
Former professor Bryan Hay passes away
Bryan Scott Hay passed away Monday, March 15, due to complications from a stroke. He taught for 36 years as professor of English and English Literature at Wichita State University, where he served as undergraduate coordinator for English and English Literature students. Born in Scotland, he and his family immigrated to the United States when Hay was a teenager.

You can now check out a hammock for free with your Shocker Card at the Heskett Center's Guest Service Desk. The Heskett Center’s hours of operation can be found on the Campus Recreation website.

Women of Wichita State 2021 fundraising blitz
The Women of Wichita State 2021 Scholarship fundraising blitz runs now through Sunday, April 18. Members and nonmembers have several opportunities to donate to this important fundraiser. The online auction is at 32 Auction and you do not need an account to view the awesome auction items donated by Wichita State departments and individuals. 32 Auction will not actually take your credit card information. After you place your bid, WWSU will identify the highest bidder and notify winners about how to submit payment. Bidding deadline is April 18.
Want the chance to make some money? Place a bid on the 50/50 drawing. For each $1 ticket, your name and ticket will be placed in a drawing using an electronic name picker for a random winner to be chosen. Bonus: Six tickets for $5. The winner will receive 50% of the proceeds of this drawing, and 50% will go directly to the WWSU scholarship. Donations are nonrefundable. Deadline to purchase 50/50 tickets is April 18.

Tuition assistance applications due April 15
The HR Total Rewards team reminds staff and faculty that the deadline for summer 2021 tuition assistance applications is Thursday, April 15.
Reminder: Tuition Assistance applications for Summer 2021 are submitted through the online application form. The fillable PDF form will no longer be accepted. Due to the volume of applications received each semester, requests to submit late applications will be automatically denied. There will be no exceptions.

Departmental ePermits for 2021-22
Due to staffing later this spring and summer, WSU Parking Services will begin the process of pre-selling FY22 ePermits to Wichita State departments, corporations and partners this month. If you are the contact for your department’s ePermit and would like to renew for FY22, please email wsuparking@wichita.edu to start the process. Your department will not be billed until the new fiscal year; however, we’d like to make sure your account is up to date so there is not a lapse in ePermit coverage. Most current departmental ePermits expire on Aug. 31.
Researchers offer help with parenting issues
Parenting can be tough! Researchers at Wichita State University are seeking to help parents manage behavior concerns in children ages 3-12. Behaviors may include whining, tantrums, and difficulty following directions. The study will include three telehealth parent training sessions (approx. 45 min each) and follow up assessments one week, one month, and six months after treatment in order to track long-term behavior change.
Parents who complete all three parent training sessions and corresponding assessments will be entered into a raffle for a $25 gift card. We are looking for about 25 families to participate in our study. If you have a child living in your home who is between 3-12 years old and is exhibiting behaviors that are difficult to manage, you may be eligible for this study.

WSU headshot appointments available for April
The Office of Strategic Communications offers headshots for WSU faculty and staff at no charge. For the 2021 spring semester, headshot events will be scheduled once a month over two days in the Rhatigan Student Center, room 266 (Pike).
Because of social distancing, you must reserve your spot with an appointment. Appointments for April are now open:

- 8-10 a.m. Thursday, April 29

SGA announces Diversity Week 2021
The Student Government Association is excited to announce that we will designate Sept.13-17 as SGA Diversity Week. There will be student and department led programming, events and discussions highlighting the diverse student experience on our campus.

Establishing an African-American narrative
Mark McCormick, director of strategic communications for the ACLU of Kansas, is the featured speaker in this week's Perspectives: Reestablishing Reality series, hosted by Andrew Hippisley, dean of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. McCormick will speak at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 14 via Zoom. Go to www.wichita.edu/reality for Zoom information.
In August of 2019, US Army soldier Glen Oakley ran toward gunfire echoing from an El Paso Walmart, grabbed an armful of children, and carried them to safety. In July, a Philadelphia man with a cracked hip climbed 15 floors to save his mother from her burning apartment building. In 2018, James Shaw Jr. wrestled an assault rifle away from a Nashville-area Waffle House shooter who’d killed four people.
Despite these and other examples of heroism, the black male media narrative remains one of poverty and violence, a narrative relentlessly defining black men by their challenges instead of by their achievements. These old, virulent narratives stigmatize and even destroy lives.
Technology Policy: A Case for Optimism and Freedom to Innovate
The Institute for the Study of Economic Growth in the W. Frank Barton School of Business is proud to bring Adam Thierer to Campus at 4 p.m. today at Wilner Auditorium and virtual via Zoom. Thierer specializes in innovation, entrepreneurialism, the Internet, and free-speech issues, with a particular focus on the public policy concerns surrounding emerging technologies. In-person attendees will receive a free copy of his book, "Evasive Entrepreneurs & the Future of Governance."

University Libraries announces winners of Undergraduate Research Awards
Congratulations to the winners of the inaugural University Libraries Undergraduate Research Award competition:
- First Prize: Andrea Martinez, biomedical engineering senior
- Second Prize: William Johnston, aerospace engineering senior
- Third Prize: Barrett Houchen, biological sciences senior
Winners attended research workshops and made excellent use of the libraries’ online databases, research guides, EndNote citation manager, and study spaces.
Faculty invited to NSF grant seminars
The WSU Office of Research is offering seminars and mock proposal reviews to prepare faculty for applying to upcoming deadlines to the National Science Foundation. The first seminar is National Science Foundation Proposal Development and will be led by Dr. Coleen Pugh, dean of the Graduate School and associate vice president for research.
The second seminar is National Science Foundation CAREER Proposal Development and will be led by Dr. Jan Twomey, associate dean of engineering for research and faculty development.
After attending the seminars, Faculty are invited to submit proposal documents for review by a panel of your peers. Faculty who submit proposal documents must also commit to reviewing other proposal documents and sharing feedback at an in-person review event.
- 3 p.m. April 23: NSF Proposal Development seminar led by Dr. Coleen Pugh (addresses general proposal applications to NSF)
- 11 a.m. April 30: NSF CAREER Proposal Development seminar led by Dr. Jan Twomey (addresses the NSF CAREER program in greater detail)
- 5 p.m. May 21: Deadline for submissions of proposal documents for peer review
- 11 .m. June 4: Peer Review Discussion led by Dr. Pugh and Dr. Twomey. Lunch provided.
