Dr. Daniel Bergman has been named the 2022 recipient of the Jean Spalding Faculty Fellowship in the School of Education. The fellowship is awarded annually to a School of Education faculty member who has distinguished themselves in teaching, research and/or service.
Dr. Bergman is the chair for the Middle/Secondary Science program and a professor of Science Education in the School of Education. His area of research includes effective science instruction, teacher behaviors, and the role of popular culture in science and teacher education. He has recently had articles published about strategies for engaging students by teachers even as they wear face coverings during the pandemic, and about teaching the nature of science in a post-COVID world. He has a forthcoming book—Teaching is for Superheroes! (Jossey-Bass/Wiley)—scheduled for a June 2023 release.
The Jean Spalding Faculty Fellowship was established by Jean Spalding with the WSU Foundation in support of faculty in the School of Education at WSU. V. Jean and her late husband, Leland Spalding had ties to WSU and enjoyed volunteering in the Wichita community. Jean Spalding enjoyed a career with the budget office at USD 259 and this fund serves as a testament to her commitment to education at many levels.
