Spring 2026 marks a significant moment for our College as we advance important milestones that reflect both our history and our future direction. I am pleased to share that the Kansas Board of Regents has granted official approval for our request to transition back to the name College of Education. This important step reflects the work that has long defined who we are and the impact we have made at Wichita State University, across the Kansas communities we serve, and beyond.
The college first began as the College of Education in 1926, and returning to this name connects our past and present in a powerful way as we celebrate our 100-year anniversary in 2026. It reinforces our shared commitment to education, learning, and leadership across all programs, while honoring the legacy built by generations of faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
This update provides a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of the breadth of our work and the students we serve. As part of the Board’s approval, two departmental name changes were also confirmed:
- School of Education to School of Teaching and Learning
- Department of Intervention Services & Leadership in Education (ISLE) to Counseling, Educational Leadership, Educational and School Psychology (CLES)
Together, these names more accurately reflect the disciplines, expertise, and professional pathways represented within the college.
As we embark on our centennial year, we continue to align our efforts closely with the goals outlined in our Journey to 2030 college strategic plan. At the center of that plan is a clear and consistent focus on students. Across the college, our work is guided by student-centeredness—designing programs that are responsive, accessible, and grounded in applied learning; building systems of support that promote persistence and belonging; and partnering with schools, communities, and industry to ensure our graduates are prepared to lead and serve.
As we celebrate 100 years of the College of Education at Wichita State University, I am grateful for the collective effort that has brought us to this moment and for the energy shaping what comes next.
Thank you for the contributions you bring to the college and for the role you play in shaping this next chapter together.
