WA-MUN was created to provide an opportunity to area high school students to learn more about the workings of the United Nations. In advance of the conference, students research their countries' foreign policy positions on a variety of global issues and craft position papers on these issues. They learn basic committee rules and procedures, then get to put these into practice at the conference as they seek to advance the interests of their countries. The conference provides a unique opportunity for students to learn consensus building skills when they caucus with other students in informal session, seeking common ground as they craft their resolutions. Students become more adept at research, writing, public speaking, and consensus building through their participation in the Model United Nations.
