What exactly is AKD? It is an organization designed to acknowledge and promote excellence in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and other social and intellectual activities that lead to improvement of the human condition.
Why become a member of AKD? Our chapter offers many services to its members. Members receive a one-year subscription to the journal Sociological Inquiry, the Alpha Kappa Delta Newsletter, and are eligible to receive travel funds for sociological meetings and conventions. We also have a forum for student members to receive recognition for outstanding papers. Most important, AKD provides a network for the academic, professional and social advancement of its members.
Who can join AKD? Any undergraduate student who is a sociology major, at least a junior, with an overall GPA of at least 3.0, a sociology GPA of 3.0, in the top 35% of their class, and has a minimum of 4 sociology courses. Graduate students are also welcome, with an overall and sociology minimum GPA of 3.0, in the top 35% of their class, and at least one semester of graduate coursework. Election to AKD is without regard to race, creed, or national origin. Our Chapter Representative, Dr. Twyla Hill, is responsible for determining eligibility for AKD membership.
