About
The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) is funding available to states, local governments, tribes and nonprofits when authorized under a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration, in areas of the state requested by the governor. Applications are submitted to the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency.
Studies show that for every $1 spent on mitigation projects, $4 of future damages are avoided. So, the HMGP’s purpose is to drive understanding and proactive action to help communities reduce future losses from natural hazards, in order to break the cycle of damage.
Projects eligible for funding under the HMGP are varied, but all must be shown to reduce the area from future damage in a similar disaster event. A few examples of post-disaster projects are flood-prone property acquisitions, structure demolition or relocation, flood reduction planning, and healthy watershed practices like open space preservation, bioretention, and other green infrastructure. Be sure to work with your state mitigation officer when planning projects for HMGP.
