Friday, March 30, 2018

Wichita State University Rhatigan Student Center

Each year, the Wichita State University Department of Sociology works with several co-sponsors to host a conference showcasing the gender and sexuality related scholarship happening across our state. The goal of the conference is to highlight scholarly and creative work of students, faculty, staff, and community partners around gender and/or sexuality issues and to provide an opportunity to network across departments and universities within Kansas.

The call for presentations is now closed, but Registration is now live!

The 5th annual conference is co-sponsored by the Department of Sociology, Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Elliott School of Communications, and Shocker Sociology Club. The conference is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and interested community members, but we ask that you register online by March 25th if you plan to attend. Click here to register.

Dr. Hoang is an assistant professor of Sociology at the University of Chicago. She received her Ph.D. in 2011 from the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley and in 2012 she won the American Sociological Association Best Dissertation Award.

Her keynote talk will focus on findings from her ethnographic research published in the book, Dealing in Desire: Asian Ascendancy, Western Decline, and the Hidden Currencies of Global Sex Work (2015) published by the University of California Press (click here).

The monograph examines the mutual construction of masculinities, financial deal-making, and transnational political-economic identities by taking an in-depth and often personal look at both sex workers and their clients to show how high finance and benevolent giving are intertwined with intimacy in Vietnam's informal economy.

Dealing in Desire is the winner of seven distinguished book awards from the American Sociological Association, the National Women Studies Association, the Society for the Study of Social Problems, and the Association for Asian Studies.
