When I initially began my search for college programs, I started with the schools who were recruiting me to play football. During this time, I realized that none of the schools would have a program until I had the chance to tour Shocker Studios! Immediately I was drawn to the idea of being able to record and make my own music while also earning a degree. I come from a family of musicians, so naturally I wanted to be one to capture those moments. I have always thought of music recording as a snapshot in time.
After college, I look forward to spreading the wealth and sharing everything I learned with future generations of audio engineers. With the music industry being a competitive and growing field, it is important to take the lessons I have learned and continue to share them with others in any way I can. Eventually, I plan to create a non-profit organization that provides recording technology and education for underserved communities. Accessibility is crucial to getting young students exposed to this field. While STEM and other disciplines are valuable, there is an essential element to creative work that makes us better as human beings. We begin to see that life is art, leading to a deeper appreciation and respect for one another.
Directly after college, I look forward to earning my Master’s Degree in Music Production Technology and Innovation at the Berklee College of Music in Valencia, Spain. I am excited for this opportunity to grow and develop as a professional as well as be around industry leading instructors. I’m most excited to potentially record my own music during my time there. Although, I think there will be obstacles and challenges, I look forward to overcoming adversity and the opportunity to grow as a person, as a producer, and audio engineer.
I will miss all my family and friends, but I know that their support will get me through this. Being in a new country I believe will give me the freedom to express myself differently, try new things, and open my mind.
When I began searching for graduate programs, I saw Berklee as a dream goal and given its level of prestige, I did not know if I would make a good fit. I am beyond glad that I went for it and applied, hearing the news changed everything for me! I encourage anyone who has a dream school or dream job to go after it and create the opportunity for yourself. One of my biggest lessons in college was to be advocate for yourself and to recognize that you will never the outcome unless you try and give it your best effort.
Lastly, I simply want to thank all the wonderful teachers throughout my life that have believed in me, giving me the ability to make mistakes and learn, and for investing their time in my success. Please know that without you, this would not be possible. I would also like to thank WSU for all the support and encouragement, especially the Office of Financial Aid for alleviating the financial burden I may have otherwise faced without them. And finally, my parents and immediate family, for their sacrifices and their constant support. Thank you to Shocker Studios, it has been an amazing four years, next stop, Valencia!
