RDH Spotlight:
Kari White graduated from the Wichita State University Dental Hygiene program in 2005. She then returned to complete her Bachelor of Science in 2008.
What made you decide to get your BSDH? In my almost sixteen years as a Dental Hygienist I have worked full-time, part-time and as a fill-in changing my work load as my family has grown. I, like most of us, got into health care because I wanted to help people and I hoped to make a difference in people’s lives. I enjoy working with a team, but also value the one-on- one time I spent with my patients. I quickly realized how education has truly impacted the overall health of my patients, and the importance of educating on the right tools to use at home to maintain and improve their oral health.
Why did you chose the company Waterpik? The Waterpik water flosser was a tool I found myself recommending to my patients regularly; I even purchased one for myself. I saw the importance of really educating myself on the products that I recommended to my patients. When I tried it myself, I was better at explaining how it worked to my patients. I was more confident in my recommendation and my patients were more likely to follow through with my recommendations. When a job became available as an Educator on behalf of Waterpik in my area of Wichita, KS; I applied. I was excited about where my career in dental hygiene could lead me outside of the clinical setting. I began my new role as an educator about a year and a half ago and I am so glad I did. I get the opportunity to provide lunch and learns to dental offices and dental schools in my area.
How was the transition from clinician to professional educator? After some training and having the opportunity to really dive deep into the science
and technology behind all the Waterpik products, this new role was a very natural
transition. Only now I was educating my peers and fellow dental professionals instead
of my patients one on one. Speaking in front of a group of professionals was nerve
racking in the beginning, but when you are knowledgeable and confident in the product
you are recommending the jitters don’t last long. The atmosphere is usually relaxed
and they are happy to see me and ready and learn....it helps that I bring food! I
absolutely love visiting with the Dental Professionals in my community and I enjoy
educating them on all Waterpik has to offer.
I’m proud to have used my education and my experience to further my career as an RDH. It’s important for all of us to keep finding the joy as you navigate through your career.
