The Dorothy & Bill Cohen Honors College Update: Welcome to Spring 2023

Dean's Welcome

A good friend sent me Ross Gay’s book of essays called Inciting Joy for Christmas this year, and I eagerly and almost immediately dove in. Gay challenges the assumption that you can’t write about joy because it’s not serious, and he challenges the assumption that joy is “often imagined as the result of some acquisition or accomplishment.”

If you want to think more about joy, listen to Ross Gay read excerpts at an event held at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, DC.

Below are some reminders and updates as we look ahead to the spring semester. We’re working - as Dr. Chelsea said in one of our December meetings - to add more joy to the calendar here.

  • Check out the available honors courses tackling pressing and practical topics such as civil liberties, culture and connection, and human anatomy.
  • Remember the Office of Instructional Resources offers fantastic training for faculty at the Academic Resource Conference next week – including sessions about AI and the classroom.

I wish you joy in the new year! And invite you to stop by our office with questions or just to let us know what you’ve been doing so far this season.

Honors Courses still available

  • POLS 356H Civil Liberties Tues 5:00 – 7:30pm (26242). What better time than now to consider questions of civil liberties? Enroll to keep this class and concept alive. Focuses on the rights individuals and groups claim against the government of the United States, with emphasis on decisions of the Supreme Court.
  • HP 290H Foundational Human Anatomy – various sections. Professor Sam Smith invites Honors students to take this course with an honors option. Study several pathologies in depth and meet medical professionals to explore diagnosis and treatment. Great for health professions, pre-med and pre-health students!
  • WOMS 580M Coloring Outside the Lines: Exploring Intersections of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity M/W 2:30-3:15pm (26936). Think critically about race and its role in society with Dr. Kevin S. Harrison.

Academic Resources Conference – Jan 9-13

Gather tips and techniques for effective teaching, hear from the President and Provost, and join the conversations about AI and the classroom. You do know about ChatGPT, don’t you? https://www.wichita.edu/services/mrc/OIR/ARC/2023/jan.php
