Successful Aging Honors Seminar
Catalogue Description: Reviews current interventions which promote successful aging. Theoretical bases of this work in biomedical and life-span-developmental psychology will be featured. This course is intended for advanced students in the College of Health Professions, Liberal Arts & Sciences and Engineering.
PURPOSE: Psychosocial and biomedical factors contribute to well-being and high quality of life; successful coping with disease and disability allow preservation of a sense of purpose as we age. The goal of this class is to promote awareness and application of this knowledge to a wide variety of fields. In addition to class reading and discussion, students will explore these concepts with a person over 65-year-of-age (with the help of the instructor), bringing firsthand experience and classroom instruction together culminating in a research paper. For the research paper, students will be asked to focus on a particular aspect of aging that is meaningful to them and explore it in depth. For example, students might focus on health care or wellness promotion (medical, psychological, or physical), social policy (e.g. developing housing policies), the arts (music, painting, writing or singing), technology and it’s use to create age-friendly environments, or business and finance (e.g. developing products and services to meet the needs of older adults).

Louis Medvene, Ph.D. is a social and community psychologist, and Professor Emeritus in the department of psychology at WSU. Dr. Medvene has been at WSU since 1992 and became an Emeritus professor in September, 2019. His primary interests are in social relationships and their influence on development over the course of the life-span. He developed and first taught this class on successful aging in 2016.

Mini-Organization Fairs are designed to host our organization fairs at a smaller scale.
The Mini Fairs are an opportunity for everyone to find a specific way to get involved
on campus. For Recognized Student Organizations, it is a chance to showcase your organization
and recruit members. Honor Societies Mini Fair is on October 30th, 2019 11-2pm on
RSC 1st floor.

Join us tonight for a frightening good time at the Heskett Center. Take a walk through our haunted hallway, try your luck at the escape room, and nibble on some spooky snacks. Costume contest, movies and more from 9-11 p.m. today (Friday, Oct. 25).
Attend the Halloween ComicFest hosted by the University Library
Come celebrate Halloween with University Libraries at our Halloween ComicFest tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 26). We will have a variety of events happening throughout the day, including a a costume contest, a green screen photo booth, appearances by the 501st Legion, 3-D Printing Demonstrations, a screening of "House on Haunted Hill," a kids craft table, free comic books, and more.
This event is free and open to the public.
Transition Mentor Applications now Open
First-Year Programs in Student Success is seeking nominations for next year’s transition mentor staff! We are looking for exceptional students who are passionate about WSU and want to help welcome new students to our campus.
Transition Mentors are responsible for transitioning students to WSU beginning in the summer with orientation, and mentoring new freshmen throughout the fall semester.

Interested in law or public policy? Just want to learn more about the second amendment? Students are invited to a mock class by Professor Bill Rich, Washburn Law School, Thursday, October 31st 12:30 – 1:30pm in RSC 261. Topic: "The Second Amendment: Which Guns, When and Where?"
Dr. Rich has provided readings to serve as background material for the class. Please note that you are welcome to attend the class even if you are unable to study the material beforehand.
