Student Feature: Honors Student Finalist in Poetry Journal Contest

Caroline Erickson's poem "Cicadas Sing Their Own Funeral Song" was honored as a finalist for the 2018 Dan Veach Prize for Younger Poets this past week.  She is delighted that this year's judge, RC Reilly, found "Cicadas" resonant and worthy of note. This contest out of Atlanta Review solicits poems of all kinds from young people ages 18-23, and competitors must submit, in addition to their poems, a statement describing their writing process and a reference letter from someone familiar with their writing. 

Caroline is a sophomore in Creative Writing and member of the Cohen Honors College.

South American Travel Seminar

Applications are currently being accepted for May 2019 travel seminar to South America(Paraguay).  This is a great opportunity for students from any major to learn about other cultures, visit new places and participate in international service learning/volunteer in schools.  The total fees for the program is approximately $2,200 plus the cost of tuition fees(1 or 3 credit hour course at WSU).  For more details about the program, please visit: South America Travel Seminar  Students who would like to apply should complete the application online or contact Ann Burger at ann.burger@wichita.edu or 316-978-5374.  Applications will be accepted and approved on a rolling basis until November 1st or until the trip is full.  Apply early to secure your spot!  And don't forget you may apply for a Cohen Enhancement Scholarship to help cover the costs!

LeaderShape

WSU is hosting our second session of LeaderShape, a 6 day experience that challenges participant to lead with integrity. This is a nationally recognized organization that facilitates participants through a series of dynamic, challenging, and exciting sessions designed to increase, develop, and launch the leadership capacity of students. This experience will not only benefit them individually, but professionally and the communities/organizations they go on to lead and serve in the future. Participants will cultivate leadership skills, reflect, and discuss leadership lessons within a small cohort or cluster of students. LeaderShape will be held at Rock Springs 4-H Center in Junction City, KS from January 13 – 18, 2018.

New Course Offering: Leadership in Self and Society

Considering what we face as a society, leadership may be our most significant challenge. In this course, we embrace adaptive challenges and create conditions for students to practice leadership in real time.  This experience is about transforming students’ capacity to make progress on the issues most important to them.

WSU gets $813,000 grant to boost minority STEM enrollment

Wichita State University has been awarded $813,000 to boost enrollment and retention of students under-represented in science, technology, engineering and math. The funds are part of a larger $3 million, five-year National Science Foundation grant awarded to Kansas State University, which is sharing grant funds with a statewide coalition of universities and community colleges. More about KS-LSAMP

WHEAT Event

WHEAT is hosting a board game night on Thursday, October 11 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM in the multi-purpose room, A1320. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Students are free to come and go as they play.

Shocker Hall Honors Lounge and Printing 24/7

Enjoy free printing, a coffeemaker, tables and bean bags chairs for studying 24/7 in the Honors Student Lounge in Shocker Hall room A1300. All Honors students have access to Shocker Hall main building 24/7. If you have any trouble with access to printing or to Shocker Hall, let the front desk know. The copier machine in the main office room A1180 is typically reserved for staff use, but we can help you find resources for copying and scanning across campus.
