Earning a college degree is a monumental achievement under any circumstances, but for recent Wichita State University graduate Daniela, crossing the finish line of the RN-to-BSN online program represents a masterclass in determination, grit, and family legacy.
Daniela’s journey into healthcare began with a relentless drive. While initially earning her Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) in Kansas City to become a registered nurse, her life was a whirlwind of high-stakes responsibilities. Her husband was deployed overseas, leaving her to solo-parent their children. At the same time, Daniela was fulfilling her own military service duties, tackling intense nursing coursework, and working on the frontlines as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at The University of Kansas.
"I navigated it by taking things one day, sometimes one hour, at a time," Daniela recalls. "I studied during hospital lunch breaks, between military duties, and late at night after the kids were asleep. It wasn't easy, but it taught me exactly how resilient I am, and that level of discipline and grit is something I bring into my nursing practice every single day."
When it came time to elevate her career and transition from her associate degree to a bachelor’s degree, Daniela knew exactly where she wanted to go. She chose Wichita State’s fully online RN-to-BSN program because it provided registered nurses with flexibility and a pathway to advance their credentials to serve their patients and communities. For Daniela, enrolling at Wichita State meant becoming part of something bigger—a long-standing family tradition. Several of her relatives had previously attended the university, making the choice feel both personal and meaningful.
“Wichita State’s program allowed me to keep moving forward without putting my life on hold… It felt like a perfect fit,” she said. “Between my family, my military community, and the legacy at WSU, I had a great team behind me.”
Now, with her BSN officially in hand, Daniela is looking toward a bright horizon. The degree has completely shifted her focus toward long-term healthcare goals, unlocking doors that will allow her to make a broader impact on the communities she serves.
Congratulations, Daniela! We are so proud to call you a WSU alumna.
Behind the Cap: Daniela’s Q&A
"The biggest challenge was definitely the ultimate balancing act. When I was initially earning my RN through an ADN program in Kansas City, my husband was deployed overseas. At the exact same time, I was serving in the military myself, solo-parenting our kids, tackling intense nursing school coursework, and working as an LPN at The University of Kansas Health System.
I navigated it by taking things one day, sometimes one hour, at a time. I studied during hospital lunch breaks, between military duties, and late at night after the kids were asleep. It wasn't easy, but it taught me exactly how resilient I am, and that level of discipline and grit is something I bring into my nursing practice every single day."
"My family was my absolute rock. Even while deployed, my husband supported me every way he could, and my kids were my daily motivation. I also had incredible backing along the way. I received a scholarship from KU, which was a huge blessing and a great nod to my work as an LPN there. But when it came to choosing where to finish my BSN, I chose Wichita State University. It has a fantastic reputation, and I actually have family who went there in the past, so it felt like a perfect fit. Between my family, my military community, and the legacy at WSU, I had a great team behind me."
"My biggest advice is to protect your 'why' and give yourself some grace. As an adult learner, you aren't just a student. You are trying to balance a full life, whether that’s a job, raising a family, or managing other major personal commitments. You have to get comfortable with a little bit of chaos and learn to be incredibly protective of your time. If that means studying during your lunch breaks at work or waking up an hour before everyone else in your house, you do what you have to do. But my favorite reminder for adult learners is that your real-world experience is actually your superpower. The timemanagement skills, discipline, and maturity you’ve developed just by living life make you a much better student than you might realize. If you can handle the responsibilities of everyday adulthood, you absolutely have what it takes to finish the schoolwork."
