For many, a degree is a piece of paper; for Jana Allison, it is a testament to years of heart, hustle, and an unwavering commitment to the students who need it most. This week, Jana officially celebrates earning her Bachelor’s degree in Education through the Teacher Apprentice Program™ (TAP) at Wichita State University, marking the culmination of a journey defined by both professional growth and personal triumph.
Jana’s path to graduation wasn't just about finishing credits; it was about balancing the intense demands of the classroom with the rigors of higher education. Working daily in a low-incidence autism classroom, Jana found her "why" every single morning.
"This degree represents resilience, sacrifice, and a deep commitment to the students I serve," Jana shared. "Working in special education has reminded me that every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and capable of success. This journey has shaped me not only as an educator, but as a person."
Jana says the program has done more than prepare her for the classroom; it has reshaped her confidence, her skills, and her sense of purpose.
“Earning my Bachelor's degree in Education through the TAP program at Wichita State University has had a major impact on my life by giving me the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to become a successful educator,” Jana said. “This journey has helped me grow both personally and professionally by teaching me patience, leadership, time management, and the importance of making a difference in students' lives. It has also shown me the value of perseverance and dedication, and it motivates me to continue growing in my career and making a lasting impact in education.”
Armed with new confidence and a deep-seated passion for special education, she is ready to continue leading and making a meaningful difference in the lives of her students.
Congratulations, Jana! Your dedication to the field of education inspires us all, and we can’t wait to see the impact you continue to make.
Behind the Cap: Jana’s Q&A
"One of the greatest challenges I overcame was balancing the demands of being a full-time teacher while earning my Bachelor's degree through the TAP program at WSU. Teaching K-1 students in a low-incidence autism classroom under my LTAP license requires patience, dedication, and constant adaptability, and adding coursework on top of that often felt overwhelming. There were moments of exhaustion and doubt, but I remind myself why I started, and that is to make a lasting difference in the lives of my students. I learned to stay organized, trust the process, and lean on my support system.
Most importantly, I learned that perseverance and passion can carry you through even the most challenging seasons."
"My greatest support came from my family, coworkers, and the mentors I have worked alongside in education. Their encouragement, understanding, and belief in me gave me the strength to keep going, especially during the hardest moments. My fellow teachers and administrators, who understood firsthand the challenges of balancing the classroom and college, constantly reminded me that I was capable of succeeding. Their support helped me stay focused and confident, and it showed me how powerful it is to have people who believe in your potential even when you are still learning to believe in it yourself."
"My advice would be to never underestimate your ability to succeed. The journey may feel long and difficult, especially when balancing work, family, and school, but every small step forward matters. Stay consistent, stay organized, and remember your purpose. Give yourself grace on the hard days, but DO NOT give up. Ask for help when you need it and trust that growth happens in the struggle. Success is not about perfection; it is about persistence. Keep going, because the finish line is so worth it!"
