About Affiliation Agreements
Academic programs that require fieldwork or internship experience as part of a course and/or degree requirement must memorialize the agreement with the external site through an Affiliation Agreement.
The Affiliation Agreement is a required legal document between WSU and outside organizations accepting WSU students for clinical or non-clinical field experiences and is used to establish a relationship of a continuing nature between WSU and an outside academic clinical or training site. This type of agreement:
- secures the student’s access to the site;
- ensures that the site’s personnel will supervise the student and provide a meaningful hands-on educational experience; and
- defines the relationship between WSU, the site, and the participating student.
An Affiliation Agreement must be completed prior to the beginning term of the placement or providing services to the organization.
The Office of General Counsel can provide assistance with reviewing, processing, or requesting Affiliation Agreements for students receiving academic credit or if practical experience is required as part of their academic program. Once the Division and/or Department determines a site is appropriate and meets WSU requirements, the Division/Department can send the site the appropriate WSU-approved Affiliation Agreement template for review and approval. Any questions about and/or requested changes to the WSU standard Affiliation Agreement templates must be directed to the Office of General Counsel. Once approved by the site, the Affiliation Agreement should be sent to the Office of General Counsel for final approval and signature.
