What is CPT?

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an opportunity for international students in F-1 status to receive practical training in their major field of study while pursuing their degree. CPT is intended to be an academic experience and not regular employment to supplement a student's income.  The experience may be paid or unpaid.  In order to do Curricular Practical Training, the following requirements must be met:
1)  Be an integral part of an established curriculum AND
2)  Be directly related to the student's major area of study AND
3)  Cannot be authorized solely for the purpose of employment AND
4)  The internship, practicum, or practical training must be a graduation requirement for all students in that major

While some majors/programs offer (or even require) a specific internship course as part of an academic track, others do not. In any case, CPT will not be authorized unless it meets a graduation requirement for the student's major.  Undergraduate students using CPT to fulfill an Engineering+ requirement may enroll in a 0-credit cooperative education course.
