CPT Filing Steps

Step 1:  Complete the webform on the next page to submit your CPT request to the Office of International Education.

Step 2:  Office of International Education will review your request. Upon determining your CPT eligibility, we will email the CPT form to your @shockers.wichita.edu email account.

Step 3:  Find a qualifying position. If you would like assistance with your job search, contact Shocker Career Accelerator.

Step 4: Submit the CPT form to the company or organization providing the training (i.e. the employer). Your employer will need to sign it and provide details including your position title and proposed start and end dates. Note that start and end dates may be adjusted by OIE at the time the CPT authorization is finalized.

Step 5: Submit the CPT form to your academic or faculty advisor or their designated signer. They will indicate which course you should enroll in for the CPT experience. Graduate Students: Some departments require submission and approval of the Plan of Study prior to signing off on a CPT application.

Step 6: Enroll in the CPT course. Keep in mind you must be enrolled in a full course of study for fall and spring semesters before CPT can be authorized.

Step 7: Review and sign page 2 of the CPT form. Email the completed form back to iss@wichita.edu.

Step 8: International Student Services will verify that you have enrolled in the required CPT course and, for fall and spring terms, that you are enrolled in a full course of study. We will then update SEVIS and email you a new Form I-20 showing your CPT authorization.

  • Student may not begin training until they receive a Form I-20 with CPT authorization and they have reached their start date. It is very important for the student to review page 2 of their CPT I-20 as soon as it’s issued to address any questions about the start and/or end dates of their authorization.
  • If the training will be paid and the student informs OIE they do not yet have a Social Security Number (SSN) prior to starting practical training, an Employment Eligibility Verification letter will be issued with the CPT I-20. We will send the student instructions on how to apply for the SSN.
  • The student should inform OIE if training ends before the end date listed on the Form I-20.

The student is responsible for being aware of the validity dates listed on the Form I-20 and seeking renewal, if desired, by submission of a new CPT application.  The start date of CPT authorization cannot be backdated.
