Steps to Transition From Intensive English to Full-time Academic Study

Please note that several of the following steps must be done in-person at WSU. If you will be traveling outside of Wichita between now and the start of the next semester, we highly recommend that you return to Wichita at least one week before classes begin. When possible, it is best to complete all steps BEFORE traveling outside of Wichita.

Step 1) Bring the notification email you received from International Education or the Graduate School (either print a copy or bring your smartphone) to the Garvey International Center along with your passport. There you will be able to pick up your new academic I-20 and complete the check-in process for the upcoming semester. Please note that you cannot complete the check-in process online, so if you leave the U.S. before you complete the check-in, you will not be able to complete the check-in and enroll in academic classes for the upcoming term until after you return to Wichita.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Your current Intensive English I-20 is no longer valid for reentry to the U.S. You must have a new academic I-20 to return to the U.S. to continue your studies.

BE SURE TO PICK UP YOUR NEW ACADEMIC I-20 AT THE INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION OFFICE BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE U.S.

Step 2) Clear any other holds listed on your MyWSU account (Housing, financial, etc). You may not be able to meet with an academic advisor if you have any holds on your account other than the Shocker Connection hold. If you have a Shocker Connection hold on your account, it will be removed at the time you see your academic advisor.

Step 3) Meet with an academic advisor in your department and plan your schedule. For information on how to schedule an appointment with your academic advisor, please see: Advising Appointments

Step 4) Enroll in a full course of study and select a payment option. Keep in mind that enrollment is a financial obligation. That means you will be responsible for paying for any course not officially dropped from your schedule by the deadline. Enrollment and payment is done online through your MyWSU. For more information about Registration visit here

Step 5) If you have your own health insurance plan and you want to find out if it qualifies as an acceptable substitute for the WSU health insurance plan (for which students are normally charged automatically), you must complete the online Insurance Waiver Form by the deadline. If your plan does not qualify, you will be charged for the WSU plan.

Step 6) Attend academic orientation. Spring 2020 undergraduate orientation is scheduled for January 18, 2020. Spring 2020 graduate orientation is scheduled for January 16, 2020. Plan accordingly so that you can attend your mandatory orientation.

Step 7) Go to class.

Step 8) Check your WSU email account frequently during the semester for important information.

For immigration information, university policies, and other helpful information visit the International Student Handbook online.

Notes for undergraduate students:

A. The Math Placement Test and English Placement Test are required for new undergraduate students. Please note that the TOEFL and English Proficiency Exam (administered by IELC) are NOT substitute examinations for the English Placement Test (administered by the English Department).

B. The English Exit Examination is given to students who have taken an English Composition course at an overseas university-level institution that has been determined to be the equivalent of an English Composition course at Wichita State University. Student MUST have written authorization from the International Education Office to take this examination.
