A Guide for Living on Campus

Wichita State Move-In Day

Moving In

You don't need to bring your entire house (Oops, I learned this the hard way). Here are a few tips I learned:

  • Make a detailed packing list of essentials before you move in
  • Bring a few items that make your space feel like home!

Here are a few items I enjoyed having:

  • Coffee Maker: Super handy not only for coffee, but for hot water for mac and cheese, ramen, etc.
  • Mini Air Fryer: Also nifty for midnight snacks.
  • Over-The-Door Organizer: SUPER handy for extra storage in a dorm space.
  • Mattress Topper (Twin XL): This makes those post-class naps hit different.
  • Power Strip: You can never have too many outlets.
  • Fan: Living with others, you never know what the temperature of the room will end up being.
  • Microwave/Mini Fridge: What can I say? I like food.

Sharing a Living Space

Communication is key! Don't be afraid to express your concerns to your roommate(s), and at the same time, be open to hearing what they have to say to you. Here are some tips:

  • Communication from the start about your expectations as a roommate will start you on the right foot to a successful living environment.
  • Everyone is raised differently and likes their space to look different ways, so get to know your roommate and their preferences.

Setting Rules and Boundaries

Set rules and boundaries from the very beginning with your roommate(s) on things such as playing music, cleanliness, inviting guests over, sharing items, etc. Doing this from the beginning will make things much easier.

Make sure to stick to these boundaries because as soon as you start to be lenient with them, they might become wishy-washy.

Also, your roommate does not have to be your best friend. It is completely fine to spend time with your roommate(s) and get to know them, but at the same time it is also important to not spend all your time with them, as that can lead to some difficult situations. Don't be afraid to get out of the room and hang out with some other friends as well!
