This #NationalOnlineLearningDay we are highlighting one of our online adult learners—Jennifer Majors. Jennifer is a senior Health Management major who has completed most of her degree online.
Jennifer decided to go back to school for her degree after starting a job as a surgical technician.
“I love working in surgery, but management has always been something I planned to pursue," she explained. "So, Health Management seemed like the perfect major to help me reach my goals.”
As an adult learner, she has many priorities competing for her time—being a mother of four, working as a surgical tech and going to school. Online classes were the best decision for her family because they enabled her to attend classes while still being present for her children.
Wichita State Health Management senior
Going back to school wasn’t easy. Online classes were overwhelming at first, but through communication with her professors, she was able to successfully balance her coursework with her busy life.
Her biggest piece of advice for navigating online courses is to “Look at each class, print the syllabus and then step away. Come back and organize each class according to the calendar in the syllabus.” Then, when you need help, reach out to your professors.
“They’re there to help,” she said.
Once Jennifer started classes, she was shocked to learn how involved students are online. Despite never meeting face-to-face, Jennifer and her classmates were able to connect and learn from each other.
Jennifer will graduate in December with her Bachelor of Science in Health Management and minor in Health Science. After graduation, she plans to work in medical sales.
The flexibility of online courses has helped Jennifer further her educational and vocational careers while still being there for her family. We’re so glad Wichita State got to be a part of her journey, and we can’t wait to see how Jennifer impacts her field after she graduates!
