In honor of the National First-Generation College Celebration, we are celebrating Wichita State’s hardworking F1RSTGEN students by highlighting Lupe Torres.
Lupe is a first-generation college student from Wichita, Kansas. She transferred to Wichita State in the fall of 2022 and is majoring in International Business with a minor in Economics.
“I chose my major because it encapsulates everything I like to do," she said. "I like to travel, connect with diverse individuals and learn about the world through the eyes of business.”
When asked why she chose to transfer to Wichita State, Lupe said, “I chose Wichita State because it is close to home and the environment here is welcoming.”
Since transferring, Lupe has become heavily involved on campus. She is a Transfer Guide and Barton Business Ambassador. She is also involved in the International Business Student Association, HALO and Latinos Lead.

Lupe also loves attending her classes. One of her favorite courses is her international business class taught by Brian Rawson. She enjoys the course because, “he has a lot of experience and stories to tell.”
As a first-generation college student, Lupe did not receive much help at home when it came to navigating the college process. She had to learn how to advocate for herself and constantly be on the lookout for opportunities.
“There are opportunities everywhere, so don’t miss out! Get started early on the application and use ScholarshipUniverse," she said.
One opportunity Lupe looks forward to taking advantage of is Wichita State’s robust study abroad program. Lupe has always had a goal of studying abroad in South Korea and looks forward to making that dream a reality.
We’re proud of everything Lupe has accomplished in her short time at Wichita State, and we can’t wait to keep celebrating her accomplishments as she continues to thrive in Shocker Nation!
