Going from high school to college can be a big step, so it’s important to be prepared for new and exciting experiences. It can be hard for some and easy for others. While it is different for everyone, it’s a transition that everyone in college has gone through.  Here are 10 tips to make the transition easier.

1. Get Comfortable

It is important to feel at home at your university, but it may not be an immediate feeling. Move into on-campus or off-campus housing early so you can get settled in your new space. This will give you time to unpack and decorate, wander around campus and drive around town to get a feel of your surroundings. Doing this in advance will make you feel less rushed and allows you to explore before classes start.

2. Get Involved on Campus

Getting involved on campus can be a great way to meet new people and gain experiences. There are several different clubs, Greek organizations and on-campus jobs to participate in and meet people through. Not only is it fantastic for keeping busy, but clubs and organizations are great for personal and professional growth.

3. Go to Class

Build a class schedule that works best for you. Take classes at the time of day when you are most focused, and don’t take too many classes on one day to avoid feeling burnt out. Try to have a day without classes to focus on homework or dedicate time to taking care of yourself. Part of college is learning to be an adult and paying attention to things that keep you accountable and successful, don’t be too upset if it takes a few tries to know what works for you.

4. Stay in Touch With Family and Friends

Whether you move across the country or across the city for college, just know that it is okay to miss family and friends. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people from home for support, they probably miss you too.

5. Explore Events and Opportunities

There is almost always something going on at a college campus that you can participate in. All Wichita State students have a membership to the YMCA that can be used anytime the gym is open, there are often mixers and late-night activities that organizations put on in the Rhatigan Student Center. Clubs and Greek Life have fundraisers with food throughout the semester. Keep an eye out for events to go to. Most campus activities are shared on social media or through Shocker Blast. Find something fun with these resources.

6. Talk to Your Advisor

Meeting up with your advisor at least once a semester is a great way to make sure that you are on track and build your schedule in a way that works best for you. Your advisor wants to see you succeed and they are here to help.

7. Use Your Time Wisely

In college, you are the only one that gets to determine how you spend your day. Make a schedule to hold yourself accountable. Schedules help students create habits and routines. This helps make sure you’re meeting goals and staying on task.

8. Meet With Professors

Every professor wants to see their students succeed. Meeting with professors after class or during office hours is the best way to get to know them. From help on assignments to possible extra credit, building a healthy and professional relationship with professors can only benefit your class experience.

9. Take Care of Yourself

When life gets overwhelming, it’s easy to neglect your personal needs. Make sure to take care of your mental and physical health and do things that you enjoy. Your well-being is just as important as your classes and activities.

10. Get Uncomfortable

While it’s important to feel at home and safe at your college, it’s also important to step out of your comfort zone and experience new things. College is the time to meet new people, gain new experiences and try new things. Make the most of your four years and enjoy the time you have in college.
