Whether you are finishing your degree, transferring classes, or starting a new educational journey, Wichita State University is here to help you get started as an adult returning back to school. Here are a few tips to get the process started.
Attend an Adult Learner Info Session
An Adult Learner Information Session is a great place to start if you're looking for more info. You get the opportunity to talk with staff from the Office of Online & Adult Learning and the Office of Admissions to learn more about the different options, tools and resources available to support your return to school.
Visit Campus
A campus visit is a fun way to check out the facilities at Wichita State and learn about what the university offers. Throughout your visit, you’ll get to meet with other students, go on a campus tour, meet with an academic advisor, and check in with Admission staff to answer any questions you may have. In addition, there is also a virtual campus visit option available.
Academic Advising
Nobody wants to experience feeling overwhelmed by the process of making difficult decisions. Academic advising can help you with the necessary resources to explore your options. From choosing your classes, to exploring degree programs, career opportunities, and campus resources, academic advisors are here to provide the support you need to be successful.
Transfer Gateway
If you have previously completed college courses, the Transfer Gateway tool allows you to see an estimate of how many will transfer through any degree programs at Wichita State. You can simply create an account and have the option to save your information along the way.
Office of Online and Adult Learning
The Office of Online and Adult Learning at Wichita State University is the perfect place to get back to campus and connect with other adult learners. Adult learners can get access to cozy coffee bars, free printing and computer services, sign up for a mentoring program, study at the Jon Stone Lounge and much more. Don't forget the Osher Scholarship, which is a great way to get financial assistance. Stop by the Grace Wilkie Annex in the heart of the main campus and check out all the amazing benefits it has to offer!
Military & Veteran Services
Military & Veteran Services at WSU is specifically designed to help military students navigate the application process and provide resources to answer any questions you may have. The team is here to help you understand the eligibility requirements and documents you may need to apply for educational benefits.
Setting Goals
Setting goals is important if you're thinking about going back to school. It is always good to talk to a friend, co-worker, family member, or academic advisor who can offer you tips and resources to help with your educational or career goals. Goal-setting has the benefit of making you feel more accountable and visualizing your future. Always keep your goals in mind and make sure you are fully comfortable with your current plan.
Organization & Time Management
It is always best to write things down or bullet point your list of things on an agenda or calendar to keep track of the tasks you might have. Lean on people like your professors, advisors, friends, family, and other resources to help you stay organized and stay on top of your studies.
Commit to Your Mental Health
It’s important to check in to ensure we’re taking care of our mental, physical, and emotional health. When things get overwhelming, don’t be afraid to give yourself a break or ask for help. If you enjoy working out or sports-related activities, check out Campus Recreation - Heskett Center and Steve Clark YMCA. All you need is your myWSU ID to get FREE access to reserved rooms, workout equipment, workshops, and sports activities.
