One of the best aspects of my job as an admissions representative is the chance to visit college fairs. I value talking with high school students and learning about their interests and goals. College fairs are a great opportunity for me to meet students who might be a great fit for Wichita State and allow students to learn about opportunities that they never knew existed. Here are a few valuable tips to make the most of the experience.
Research
Prior to attending a college fair, try and find out what colleges will be attending and begin to think about which schools you want to learn more information about. Think about your major or career interests, and which schools might offer that area of study.
Bring something to carry materials
Most schools will give you informational publications, pamphlets, and business cards; and it can be a lot to try and carry around. Bring a bag, if you’re able, to collect everything you receive from college representatives.
Think of questions to ask
It’s vital to think of questions to ask about each college. What is important to you when you’re thinking about what college you want to attend? Ask about your intended major or area of study, the size of the university, the student-to-faculty ratio, student involvement opportunities, etc. This is your chance to learn some new information about different colleges, so think of what you want to know!
Prepare your contact information
Many college representatives will ask for your contact information. Sometimes college fairs will use an app that allows you to fill out your information ahead of time, and then gives you a barcode for representatives to scan. Otherwise, many colleges will have you fill out your information on a contact card. Make sure you have all the necessary information and a professional email address.
Be prepared to talk to multiple reps
Take your time at the fair, walk around, and talk to as many representatives as you can. You never know what you might learn about a college!
Push yourself outside of your comfort zone
Be prepared to be adventurous. Even if you are only interested in one school, branch out and talk to a few others. Ask lots of questions and allow the college representatives to get to know you and your interests.
After the College Fair
- Review the materials you received from the different colleges
- Schedule campus visits at schools that you are most interested in
- Check your email! Colleges will start sending important information regarding scholarships, applications, and other information that will be helpful to know. Be sure to check!
