One of Wichita State University's highest priorities is providing students with accessible and affordable education. The generosity of Gene and Yolanda Camarena is a large part of seeing that mission come to fruition.

Established in 2020 by the Camarenas, the Adelante Scholarship is aimed at providing tuition and fee gap aid to 25 full-time incoming freshmen and transfer students. The scholarship is worth up to $40,000. These packages include the Adelante Scholarship and other WSU scholarship. To be eligible students must:

  • Be admitted to Wichita State for the fall by April 1, 2024
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Show financial need by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Enroll as a full-time student

It is awarded as a last payee to cover tuition and fees after all other aid. Scholars also receive mentoring and tutoring services as a resource.

The Camarenas chose the name "Adelante" - which means "to move forward; to get ahead" in Spanish - in hopes of inspiring scholars to overcome barriers and continue progressing during the education process. Current and former Adelante Scholars hail from all parts of Kansas as well as Texas, Colorado, Missouri and Louisiana, and range in area of study from all of Wichita State's academic colleges.
