Have you ever thought about what it takes to be a good leader? Are you interested in strengthening your leadership skills? If this is you, the Student Ambassador Society’s Leadership Conference (SASLC) is the perfect opportunity to connect with other students and sharpen your abilities!

SASLC is an event for high school students of all grades. The agenda includes:

  • A keynote speaker
  • Breakout sessions and collaborative small group activities focusing on communication, decision-making and problem-solving.
  • An optional campus tour

Students also receive a workbook, conference t-shirt and lunch.

Why You Should Attend

Leadership is a vast term that encompasses many different skills such as delegation, problem-solving, confidence, listening, teamwork and much more. Honing these skills early is essential for personal, academic and career development. Attending SASLC strengthens college applications and resumes by showing a commitment to personal growth. You will walk away from SASLC a stronger leader than when you entered!

Not only is this event educational, but it is fun! If you are a high school senior, this is a great way to make friends for your upcoming freshman year and learn more about Wichita State’s campus. This opportunity is also a fantastic way to prepare for the Distinguished Scholarship Invitational in November if you are a high school junior!

A Shocker's Perspective

Kennedy McMillen is a Student Ambassador at WSU who understands the benefits of attending a leadership conference.

“I come from a very small, 1A school," McMillen said. "When preparing for college and jobs, I did not feel confident in my leadership and public speaking skills. I was an active member of Student Government in high school, which opened me up to opportunities to expand my leadership skills.

"By attending conferences, I learned how to step outside of my bubble and meet new people, how to effectively express my ideas to a group, and how to act in different situations. It taught me how to be comfortable doing uncomfortable things, like speaking my mind on a topic knowing some people will not agree with me. It is also a great opportunity to build connections and meet new people. If I could go back to high school, I would attend more events and conferences focusing on leadership because it is an important skill and shows what you are capable of to colleges, future employers and your peers.”

This event takes place annually in March and is open to all high school students from Kansas, and you are welcome to join us even if you have attended before! We would love to see you there!
