If you’re looking for a fun, free way to experience Wichita and enjoy the nice weather, Open Streets ICT is the place to be. Every spring, 17th Street along Wichita State’s campus transforms into a lively, car‑free festival where thousands of Wichitans walk, bike, skate, explore and celebrate what makes the city special.

What Is Open Streets ICT?

Open Streets ICT is a community‑building event that temporarily closes large sections of major streets to vehicle traffic and opens for people instead. It is like a giant outdoor block party stretched across a section of urban road. The goal: promote healthy living, encourage social connection, and create a space where all ages can enjoy the city in a new way.

The event began in 2017 and has grown into a citywide tradition. It now includes multiple events throughout the year, but one of the most unique versions happens right here in the Shocker Neighborhood.

The 17th Street / Shocker Neighborhood Edition

Each spring, Wichita State hosts Open Streets ICT – WSU & Shocker Neighborhood along 17th Street from Oliver to Volutsia. For a few hours, this stretch becomes a vibrant, walkable hub filled with activities, food, art, vendors and community partners.

In previous years upwards of 8,000–10,000 people came out to explore the route, which includes:

  • Local Art & Creative Experiences
The Ulrich Community Art Market brings together local and student artists for live demos and hands-on activities.
  • Food Trucks & Local Flavor
From barbeque and burgers to sweet treats, the food truck lineup always brings a taste of the region’s best.
  • Family Resources & Community Connections
Wichita Collective Impact hosts a Summer Resource Fair packed with information about youth programs, jobs, activities, and community services - perfect for families planning ahead.
  • Health & Wellness
Free health screenings are available through Clearway Testing’s mobile clinic, and the entire event encourages movement, activity and outdoor fun.
  • WSU Student Organizations & Colleges
Dozens of Wichita State groups line the route, making this a great way for future Shockers to meet student organizations, academic programs and campus support services.

Open Streets ICT showcases the energy of the Shocker Neighborhood and the city as a whole. It’s a free event that not only promotes healthy living but also connects Wichita’s vibrant community.
