There are no times because it was a floating start and each race was not exactly the same length. Approximate length 2,200 meters. Results are listed in finish order-first column, grouping from each school-second column, distance between crews at finish-third column It was a nice first race for our squad. They are a young and inexperienced group and this was a great learning time for them. We are heading in the right direction with our program and athletes. Results like this in our first year of restructuring prove that we have made some good choices and are on the right path. With the high number of freshman we have I am very excited about not just this season but also the potential over the next four years as we use this group as our core and build around them. *Head Coach - Calvin Cupp*

There was very strong competition from big programs like Wisconsin. With the injuries we had at that time I was very pleased with the overall results. I feel that if all of our athletes had been healthy then we could have finished higher in all of the events. With such a young group it was an important race to give them perspective of where we stack up in relationship to some of the better teams in the country. Wisconsin is probably the top overall men's team in the country right now and their women, along with U. of Iowa are very strong. Our athletes now are excited about our final race of the season and then getting indoors to work on our fitness so we can challenge these bigger teams in the spring. *Head Coach - Calvin Cupp*

The 2002 Frostbite was a tremendous success!!

The 2002 Frostbite was the largest ever according to Regatta Director Don Wadsworth. That being said the performance put forth by the Shocker Rowers was impressive. "Last year we only placed in one novice event and this year we placed in two, " Coach Cupp said. Last year I was mainly working with the varsity, which placed in three of five events and finishing fourth in one. This year I have been able to spend more time with the novices and I believe their progress showed at the end of the year as we captured the silver medal after an 8th place finish last year in the Women Novice 8+."

"I am proud of our young squad," Coach said of his team, "for almost all freshman they have shown great work ethic and maturity. They have had to forge ahead without the benefit of upperclass leadership. They have had to become mature beyond their years."

Conditions: A variable cross/crosstail persisted all weekend. Water varied from nearly flat to slight whitecaps.

Notes: The Knecht Cup was a great race for our team. The level of competition there is, is about as tough as it gets with some of the top women's NCAA teams and some Eastern Sprint level teams testing their speed.

All of our teams were competitive but the highlight was definitely the Women's Novice 4+. We had hoped that one of our crews would be competitive and progress from the heats but when they went out and won their heat by beating Indiana's NCAA women and rowed to the forth fastest qualifying time we knew they could do well. The semi draw was a good one for us and the girls went out and won it by open water. With the forth fastest semi time we knew the Grand Final would be at real fight as John Hopkins was fourteen seconds faster than us when comparing times. The final turned into a two boat race with John Hopkins and Wichita State distancing themselves from the pack during the first thousand meters of the race. Both crews stayed virtually even with each team trading the lead back and forth by a few feet. Unfortunately, John Hopkins had a sprint the last hundred meters that our girls just could not match and they moved away to win by four seconds. While it was heart wrenching to watch Hopkins move away it was still a great time to be a Shocker as we were able to watch the rest of the pack fight it out for third thru sixth place.
