We are always excited to invite OSU to our home waters. This is the third year of this duel and the first year for a team points trophy. We don't do individual medals for each event and opt for just a team trophy because we want the emphasis to be on the total contribution that each crew makes to the team. Our novices really came through with some wonderful rows against some quality programs. The women took gold in the Novice 8+ and silver in the Novice 4+. Our men rowed to first in the Novice 8+ and first, third and fifth in the Novice 4+. This type of finish is a great indicator of solid boat speed.

The young varsity squad was ready for the challenge. The women had solid finishes in the pair and four. Both of them finished out of the medals but had quality finishes ahead of some good boats. The men competed in the four and eight. They also finished out of the medals but had quality rows.

Gold medals in the Novice 8+ and Varsity 4+ put the women out in front. The novice 4+ finished out of the medals and points in a tight race with only fourteen seconds separating themselves in fifth place with the silver medal crew. Our Varsity Women s 8+ suffered a tough defeat as they finished with the bronze medal, only one second out of silver. However, it was enough to hold on to the Women s Team Points for the second year in a row. (In 2003 we took only eight women rowers and two coxswains. We came away with two gold s, a silver and women s team points.)

Our men had a tough road ahead of them at the regatta. Our men started the day with a strong row in the Varsity 4+ which resulted in a bronze medal. Their row in the Novice 8+ was not as strong and they finished with the silver to Oklahoma City University by nine seconds. The men took the gold AND silver by a wide margin in the Novice 4+. This put us ahead going into the last race, the Varsity 8+. Unfortunately, this would be the third race for half of the guys and the fourth for the other half. The men put together a great row from a technique standpoint but just did not have enough punch in such a tough event. They finished out of the medals and won second out of fourth place. This did not secure enough points for us to hold onto the lead and OCU be us out 285 to 275.

The 2004 Frostbite Regatta saw a major change with a shift in the venue to the big Arkansas. Because of construction work on the Murdock street bridge, the little river was down. However, a record number of athletes and perfect weather set the stage for a great regatta.

Shocker Rowing had a stellar day. The team entered twenty-five boats in fifteen events. The crews even had to practice the events outside of normal practice. We accomplished our goal of gaining some race experience and giving some athletes a chance to row with people they normally do not. We entered twelve sweep events with some multiple entries. We medaled in ELEVEN of the twelve with multiple entries in two events. This was by far the best result as a team since 1994 (could not find 1995 results), that year Shocker Rowing duplicated these results with thirteen medals in eleven events.

The Marathon Championship Regatta creates a unique opportunity for a person to challenge their self as an oars person. Coach Cupp is also one of the founders of this regatta and a former regatta director. The distance is much longer than anything that is normally trained for in the collegiate season. It is both mentally and physically demanding. The race course is as challenging as any in the country with some of the most difficult turn sequences you can imagine.

Both crews performed well with Gold medals times. The novice boat won their event with a time of four hours and two minutes (4:02.00). The varsity boat won their event with a time of three hours, nine minutes and twenty-five seconds (3:09.25). The varsity boat also has the distinction of having raced the second fastest time for that event over the fifteen year history of the regatta.
