Post Race Release This was our fifth annual meet and we have been fortunate enough to come away with the team points trophy each of the five years. As this is a team victory there is a sense of pride and contribution for each athlete to take with them. When they look back on the year they know that each of them contributed to the day and helped make the victory for Shocker Rowing possible. All of our crews raced hard and represented Wichita State University well. Now that we have had this first important test the coaching staff is excited about working with the squad of forty-nine athletes to improve in the areas we were identify during the racing that need the most attention. Our annual duel with Oklahoma State is a valuable opportunity for our program. As the vast majority of our novice rowers are walk-ons, this provides an experience which will help them be better prepared for larger regattas like the Head of the Oklahoma next week. |

Post Race Release Shocker Rowing recently returned from a successful Head of the Oklahoma campaign. The Head of the Oklahoma is one of the premier fall regattas in the country. Elite college crews from both coasts lined up on Saturday to test their speed. Crews from Harvard, Washington, Stanford, Washington State and Radcliffe set the pace in the marquee events. The Shockers novice squad led the way with a dominating performance on the river. Medal performances in all the novice events throughout the day set the tone for the Shockers. By taking four of the six medals in the men's novice four and eight, the young squad sent notice that they are a group to watch. The varsity squads raced well against some of the best crews in the country.Their performance was highlighted by a fourth place finish in the men's varsity 8+. Later in the day as the sun set on the river, the lights were turned on and the qualifying Shockers launched for the OG&E Night sprints. The men raced aggressively in the varsity 8+ and came away with the bronze medal. A very excited crowd of Shocker fans joined in with the large crowd of spectators as everyone cheered the Shockers to victory over the short night sprint course. Leading from start to finish the Shocker men's varsity 4+ was covered the entire time on the thirty foot Jumbotron as cameras followed the entire 500 meter race. It was an exciting time as the men were presented with their gold medals and then interviewed live across the PA system and video screens throughout the regatta site. It was a proud time to be a Shocker. The coaching staff knows that the experiences of this regatta will play a big role in the weeks to come as Shocker Rowing prepares for their home event, the Wichita Frostbite Regatta. There is no doubt that the squad is excited to build on this recent success and take to our home waters with expectations of continued success. |

Post Race Release Sunshine, warm temperatures and moderate winds along with record entries set the stage for a great Frostbite. Shocker Rowing entered seven-teen of the thirty-eight events offered and prepared for a busy and competitive day of racing. The day started well with a silver medal in the first event of the day, the mixed double. Strong finishes in every event contested would follow with the novice men again setting the standard by winning both the first novice men's 8+ and novice men's 4+. Our second novice men's 8+ did their part to hold the standard with a silver in that event. Capturing three sculling medals was a first for Shocker rowing and varsity rower Allen Strickler was a big part of that as he was in all three of those crews. We were very pleased with how tough our crews raced today, Coach Cupp, not only did we enter more events this year we entered several sculling events and placed very high. Our program is growing and moving in the right direction. The staff is looking forward to working with all of our athletes as we prepare for the spring season. |

Women's Rec 1x 1- 4:35:09 - Wichit State U. - Coach Breithaupt |
The men's open 4 placed 3rd out of 7, beating our team's time from last year by 5 minutes. We're proud of our athletes who took on this challenge of rowing a marathon, most of our fall races have been 1-2 miles. We do not train for the marathon distance, so it's an opportunity for the athletes to prove to themselves that they can push themselves physically and mentally and for the coxswains to create a race plan that lasts 3-4 hours. Coxswains Diana Truong and Alfredo Ortiz did a fantastic job motivating their crews and steering around the many bends in this race. We're also proud of our volunteer assistant coach Angie Johnson who coxswained the men's open eight. On a side note, Assistant Coach Tori Breithaupt also competed in the Women's rec single winning gold. She rowed the 26.2 miles in 4 hours 35 minutes breaking the course record in that event. |
