Music for a Time of Trial” - The Wichita State University Wind Ensemble opens the 21-22 season with a program full of powerful contemporary repertoire. The program opens with David Maslanka’s Testament. This piece was written shortly after 9/11 and depicts the struggle of that time and a prayer for healing. Frank Ticheli’s Sanctuaryis an introspective and nostalgic work that displays the soft and sonorous qualities of the wind ensemble. Emerging from musical prayers comes the anger and disbelief of tragedy depicted in Omar Thomas’ Of Our New Day Begun. Written to honor the victims of the terrorist attack on Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, SC, Thomas utilizes “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as a unifying element that takes us from being heartbroken and shell-shocked to feeling powerful and spiritually uplifted. The program will close with Tetelestai (…it is finished) by Andrew Boss. The definition of Tetelestai suggests having completed an action that is both irreversible and infinite. This tour-de-force symphony for wind ensemble serves as a strong emotional closing to a program depicting times of struggle, hardship, and ultimate victory.
