People, Pride & Promise: The Story of the Dockum Sit-in is an exhibit that commemorates America's first successful student-led lunch counter sit-in.
This exhibit explores how early Civil Rights Era lunch counter protests helped shape and transform the struggles for racial equality in America. Through historical contexts and articles, you will get to know the little-known story of the Dockum Sit-in, as well as the story of Dr. Galyn Vesey, who was among a small group of students that led this historic protest on July 19, 1958.
While the exhibition acknowledges the history of the Dockum Drugstore Sit-in and utilizes the name of a previous traveling exhibition, the event is not an official Storytime Village exhibit. However, we would like to thank Storytime Village for allowing Wichita State University to continue honoring Dr. Vesey and commemorating the Dockum Drugstore Sit-in.
15th Annual MLK Commemoration
The annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration highlights and memorializes the work, accomplishments and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hear from Dr. Galyn Vesey, a lifelong Wichita native and civil rights activist, on his love of justice, humanity and service within the community through power and activism. The event will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31 at the Cadman Art Gallery in the Rhatigan Student Center at Wichita State University (1845 Fairmount St. Wichita, KS 67260). We will also recognize the 2023 Drum Major Award recipients. This event will serve as a closing reception for the gallery exhibition.
